Everyone just has to go with the flow of the system of whatever their chosen career is. Lower-paying jobs are often Worse and can require you to randomly work long/hard af anyway so there isn't really a reason to do them. There isn't really a cost:benefit calculation at play most of the time, for most people. Success in Law for instance is based mostly on acing OCI. Who is "striving" versus "not striving" after that point? Do you just look at the ones with worse phenotypes and call them "strivers?" I get that not everyone can be as Cool as me and work retail and later Film Curation, go to bars and drive drunk and have Friends. However, I do get annoyed at Idiots who make $500k and think that they *need* to make $500k or else they will die because Rent costs $8,500 a month and Daycare costs $8888/month, as if they truly don't understand that entire industries have cropped up in order to take advantage of Idiots of their particular walk of life. |

Yes, striving absolutely has to do with phenotype and/or mental illness, as mental illness can many times be exacerbated or induced by life experience with bad phenotype. No one really feels they "must" make 500k because the expensive neighborhoods and lifestyles they "must" be in and have require that income, most people "strive" because there is some insecurity or need to be "better" or need to compensate for other perceived shortcomings holding them back. The only reason expensive fashion brands exist is, yes, to separate people from their money and cater to their sense of narcissism and elitism, with "quality" being of secondary concern. It's all about signaling and messaging. But those bags and cars and houses don't really bring about lasting happiness - these are just "things" and the utility of the pleasure they brings you will decrease over time. Additionally, there will always be people who do better than you which in Striverville will only serve to reinforce your bad ideas and habits and you'll think, "well if I only had this..." then I would be happy. Happiness is a choice and ultimately a reflection of being happy with what you have. Breaking your back to prove worth or status by striving for years on end is ultimately a pointless endeavor as it doesn't bring about lasting happiness. As far as people doing lower paid work and just going through the motions, well, most people do have to have income to have the basics and so while bleak, they aren't striving in the sense I'm referring too. They're more surviving. There's a big difference between striving and surviving. But there's no easy way out of that. Why do you think the lottery hits over a billion dollars in jackpot size?
