Of the liquidators who even got ARS only 1 in 3 died. And that’s because Soviet medicine was shit. Had they gotten immediate bone marrow transplants upwards of 90% would have lived.
While the overall cancer rates from Chernobyl in the Chernobyl zone probably quadrupled that’s only if you include Thyroid cancers in the stats. Thyroid cancers are generally survivable. Take those out of the math and you are looking at probably a 50% increase in cancer but the USSR collapsed and the collapse in nutirition, sanitation and public health following the Soviet collapse saw almost the same increase in cancers EVERYWHERE in the Soviet block. |
