About 6 months ago her neighbor turned her on to something called localbitcoins where people would send her cash in overnight fed ex envelopes which she would convert to bitcoin with 8% commish. Probably did $500k worth of transactions and made $40k. says it never dawned on her these were probably drug dealers washing money.
in april someone contacts her and asks her to do a wire transaction offline. he will wire her some funds and she will take 5% commission and send rest in bitcoin. she claims to have no idea how much hes wiring, but the wire comes in and its for $2.6mm. She dutifully buys $2.45mm in bitcoin and sends it to his wallet. Bank reverses the transfer, her bank balance is now $-2.35mm and the FBI showed up at her suburban townhouse on Friday at 6am with a search warrant. |

Are there avenues where you can go from crypto back into fiat without leaving much of a paper trail? I guess it makes sense if that were the case, but I'm not well versed enough into the crypto/banking scene to know whether such things exist.
I thought the bigger issue was that people who sell drugs on DNM end up with a bunch of crypto that they can't easily convert back to fiat without inviting questions as to how they acquired so much crypto to begin with |
