What would you do? Need something for family - wife insists on SUV - baby coming in July or August. Thoughts?

It has a pretty solid 6 year warranty that is transferable. Good sized third row or trunk space if you need it for baby stuff.

Interior is a half step nicer than an equivalent Toyota and you don't drive the same thing everyone else has if you care about that sorta thing. My wife has one and I like the way it looks.

Not a lot but would like for it to last a long time and be able to drive long distances in the future (eg NYC to South Carolina).

Right now we'd probably put 12k+ miles on it a year

- NYC to East Hampton (250+ mile roundtrip) drives 20+ times a year

-Driving to office 3x/week (20 mile roundtrip)

-Weekly grocery shopping, errands

All the compact SUVs are pretty comparable these days. We have a Nissan Rogue. We're a family of four (two boys) and it's plenty roomy and has tons of storage space for us. You can get a loaded 2019 for $30k, and if you're willing to do without some options can find a nice one for about $25k.

I assume thats his point but with a cpo you get like 3 more years of warranty and for 30k you could probably add on more years of bumper to bumper if you were really concerned.

And the cost and frequency of repairs on modern german v Japanese is over exaggerated.

i own a bmw, enjoy it, and would not buy another again. i would recommend it to people only if the money isnt a big deal, which isnt case for OP

https://repairpal.com/reliability/bmw

cpo gets you +1-2 year from original, if you are buying under 30k its going to be fairly old and warranty is going to be almost gone. lots of problems with oil leaks and hoses and shit start year 5+

I reached this conclusion, too. Had a used 5-series. Not doing it again. Swore I'd just get a Toyota or Honda next to balance it out. With used BMW plan on $1-2k/yr+ of maintenance, including an unplanned trip every year. There's so much shit that breaks, leaks, inexplicably stops working, etc.

You absolutely do not. You get an extra year added on to the original and unlimited miles. You can also add 2 years at some enormous cost which given his budget isn't in the cards.

CR, or a used 4Runner.

I just brought my 99 4runner into a mechanic and asked them to find anything worth fixing and i'd pay for it. They said that maybe it would be worth replacing the muffler due to rust, but even then that's not a performance issue, just QoL.

As for resale value, look at the used 4runner market lol. They haven't updated the platform in ~10yrs and they just set a sales record this past year. That never happens

It was a touring and I had a $750 loyalty discount for being a current Mazda owner or something.

I also traded in a 2015 Mazda 6 with 65k miles for $11k. It was really beat up though. Maybe they were able to lower the CX9 price a bit because of that.

I think you should be able to get one for no more than $33k.

I just went online and looked for new cx9 deals in Phoenix and see $31.7k for sport and $33k for touring.

See here. Appears to be real prices without any unobtainable incentives:
