yeah i just don't it being advantageous over pulling your phone out of your pocket.
i was surprised that the google glasses didn't take off. seems like a million useful applications for that with the augmented reality and stuff

It's a modern day slave bracelet LJL at getting 'important' notifications on your wrist throughout the day.
It's for wagecucks, phats and mentally ill strivers.

Apple Watch shipments increased 49 percent last quarter year-over-year, according to Counterpoint Research, but no specific numbers were provided. Apple has never disclosed Apple Watch sales, but its "Wearables, Home, and Accessories" category set a new March quarter revenue record of $5.1 billion.
Doesn't like a failure to me.

Have a Galaxy Watch and not an Apple but I love it. I know XO hates everything new and modern but I don't understand how smartwatches aren't great. They work as fitness trackers, let you do things like check the weather and make quick calls/send quick texts, let you control your music and generally mean that you can see who is calling/texting/whatever without actually pulling out your phone. That's in addition to doing all the normal things watches do.
Also, not sure this is really a "failure": https://9to5mac.com/2019/05/02/apple-watch-quarterly-shipments/

agree 100%
i poasted in another thread on the apple watch that i could see the utility for top-level athletes who compete, bodybuilders, fitness models, or anyone else for whom small differences in performance or calories or food or whatever are important.
but my god, 98% of the population should be able to account for this stuff intuitively, and you are correct that waking an extra 800 steps so some fat woman hits a round number that isn't based on anything is worthless.

Not the Iwatch, but I have two smartwatches. One is a classy all metal one for office and court. its great for surreptitiously looking at texts while a judge is yelling at me. I can voice reply to texts and voice to text little notes. google pay is actually awesome on it and i can customize the look. I like it, but can certainly do without
The second is a sport one that can hold songs and track everything. Its much better for active workouts since i do not have to strap my tablet sized phone to my body or worry about it getting water damaged. Not sure I could do without

can't speak for applewatches bc i don't have one
but if u do a significant amount of fitness, a minimal smartwatch is a godsend
i wear a garmin instinct all the time, which is a monochrome watch that has minimalist smartwatch features. it's minimalist in the sense that it can go more than a week without recharging.
it's * extremely * useful for:
(1) tracking and logging heart-rate. the included heart-rate sensor is acceptable for tracking 24/7 trends (like resting heart rate, etc.); i use a chest strap to enforce stuff like low-intensity steady-state cardio. the heart-rate variability metrics are also useful to avoid overtraining.
(2) tracking distance/speed/time splits while biking / running / swimming. carrying a phone is either impractical or impossible sometimes, but the watch can go everywhere.
(3) general exercise monitoring. u click a button and u can create separate stats for interval training or whatever you're doing; over time u build up a database of how ur body behaves during certain exercises.
(4) general sleep monitoring -- it keeps track of how long u sleep, what sleep phase you're in, etc.
(5) text/message notifications are very useful when i'm working away from my phone (e.g. i spend some weekends working on renovating a house; it's much easier to glance at my wrist than take out my phone while i'm replacing siding).

iWatch 4 owner. I bought it exclusively for exercise, to me it's a fancy GPS + iPod and that's about it. Zero interest in actually using it day to day. You can buy these off Apple's refurb site for a decent discount.
The default fitness app is 'ok' but I definitely need to explore other alternatives, out of the box it's not as good as a Garmin for metrics while running.

i've been against them for a while but have recently considered getting one. my main use would be logging lifts at the gym while leaving my phone at home, if i got the LTE version. as far as i know, garmin, fitbit etc don't have the ability to do this as they only have the built-in apps which are likely not enough for my purpose. being able to try new fitness apps until i find one i like seems pretty cool.
the downside is it's like $10/mo for the LTE, $3/mo for the app, and like $500 for the watch. seems like dumb money.

When I was in the Dominican last month for a wedding I did coke nonstop for four days. On the third day my friend used his iPhone watch to measure my heart rate because he was worried. It was 117.
I thought that was a cool function

It's like a regular watch, but the time is always accurate, it can display additional info like the weather or your next meeting, play music/podcasts on your run, give you directions on a bike ride, and make/receive phone calls without your phone.
The tradeoff is you have to charge it at night, swap bands between exercise and office, and replace it every two years with a newer model.
