It is spring break in the US and so I’m writing this from Costa Rica where I have come with 25 friends, mostly from my section (Go ‘E’!). Given the lazy week we’re currently enjoying by the pool, it seemed appropriate to reflect on the more stress-free, but equally important, social aspect of business school.
First, the party scene. HBS has a pretty strong culture of going out. Despite Boston’s stellar efforts to dampen your party spirit (clubs close at 2am, cabs are nowhere to be seen post-1am), there’s always something going on. Every week some HBS society will hold a party at a downtown club, with certain societies, in particular the European Club, enjoying strong party reputations.
HBS birthday parties also tend to come with bizarre themes. A couple of weeks ago I went on a ‘party bus’ around Boston dressed as a parrot – green jeans and a weird hat – to fit in with the ‘animal’ theme set for the evening by the birthday girl. The class at 8.40am becomes a horrible reality as you crawl into bed a few hours earlier.
Second, the dating scene. In part correlated to the partying, several HBS couples have emerged in my year. A decent percentage of students that came to HBS in my class were unattached, some because they were simply single, others because they had made the difficult decision to break up with a partner who wasn’t coming to Boston with them. This makes for a pretty intense dating scene should you seek it out.
Couples sprung up pretty much from day one, with some people even dating since they met at admit weekend a year ago. Some compare dating at HBS to dating at middle school: everyone knows what’s going on in your love life, sometimes even before you do. People have worked this out quickly. Subsequently, for every couple you know of, there is at least another that has decided to keep it quiet for now to avoid the keen eyes of their classmates.
Finally, the trips. I have left Boston pretty much every other weekend since I’ve been here. MBA students have a strong aptitude for organising far-reaching excursions. For this summer my classmates are currently deciding between trips to Lebanon, Greece, Israel, Japan, Latin America and eastern Europe (among others). The realisation that a full-time career beckons in 2012 definitely fuels most of this enterprise. I doubt any of us will ever have this much free time again until we retire. And on that note it’s back to the pool!
