Jonah Keri, the prominent sports columnist and author, was charged with assaulting his wife, according to Montreal outlet CTV News. He was granted bail on Friday after being charged with four counts, “including three counts of assault causing bodily harm and uttering death threats.”
Keri, who writes and podcasts for The Athletic, also has jobs with Sportsnet and Draftkings. He was previously a baseball columnist for ESPN’s Grantland and has written two books about the Tampa Bay Rays and Montreal Expos.
The Athletic announced Keri was suspended in a statement, saying, “The Athletic has a zero-tolerance policy for violence of any kind.”
According to the report, court documents say Keri attacked his wife in May and July of 2019, as well as July 2018.
CTV reporter Kelly Greig tweeted the charge sheet. Keri’s lawyer, Louis Morena, said that “Death threats are sometimes said in a moment of anger especially when there’s an emotional situation of divorce and you’re seeing your family go down the drain.”
As part of his bail conditions, Keri cannot be within 250 meters (approximately 800 feet) of his wife or carry weapons. He was also given ten days to remove his possessions from his home.

Good advocacy there, bud.
