they're not and this didn't happen.

also you're not at a big law firm.

additionally, you're not a lawyer.

lastly, you haven't even graduates from college.

I doubt it. In this day and age, someone like you, approaching someone like him? I suspect they'd respect you for it. And reward you for it. Gumption is dying. People don't have the vim and vigor of yesteryear. But you show up on a Tuesday morning pounding the desk of the Chancellor of the Firm, demanding a raise based on this new information? That takes balls. The law rewards balls.

Corollary to what I said above: you don't have balls, you're apt to get left behind. There's a natural winnowing process to the law. Lot of snot-nosed nobodies can survive in the practice in their 20s, 30s. As the years proceed, only the strong survive. You look at the practitioners in their 70s, 80s--direwolves; spartans who'll rip your throat out for citing the wrong statutory extension clause. You have to set yourself up for the right track as quickly as you can if you want to thrive and survive in this business. This kid has a shot to do that now if he steps up.

this seems totally implausible but hilarious as fuck if true. what incremental benefit does the firm hope to get from having this guy for a couple years?

none but law firms are stupid with money. they pay enormous bonuses for scotus clerks and some appellate clerks who stick around for exactly one year.

I 100% agree that lawyers are stupid about money and the economics of a deal. But I thought that’s less so the case? I’m guessing if bankers ran a big law firm it’d look like Kirkland & Ellis.

The firm in your made up story is behind the times imo

some firms now have CEOs and COOs who try to run it more like a business and less like a 10 person partnership applied to 500 partners. K&E makes money hand over fist but they are one firm that will give out huge bonuses for elite clerks who have no intention of sticking around. other firms are still mostly stuck in the past like mine.

it doesnt make any sense to give a scotus clerk $700,000 in their first year of practice either when they plan on sticking around for a year or two but they do it anyway.

Generally you should defer to the folks with lots of money on the line before assuming they’re being stupid. The article itself suggests the obvious reason this could make sense: access, insight and maybe favorable treatment.

SCOTUS clerk bonuses seem like a poor analogy to overpaying a brand new clerkshipless grunt
