We talked about it, it is unclear why they sent their kids to HW. These are all very wealthy families, so everyone could afford it, but there didn't appear to be any reason for it.
EDIT: it was unusual, virtually everyone else in the private community I grew up with went to Calabasas. Las Virgines school were really good public schools. |

We played a game of horse, I lost, so it was up to me.
I rang on the doorbell and, low and behold, she answered the door. I had no idea what to say, so I asked to borrow an egg. I told her that I was going to make an omelet (it was the afternoon). She smiled and told me that one egg wasn't enough to make an omelette, so I smiled back and told her it was going to be a tinsey-little one, to which the absurdity delighted her. She was tall with long blond hair, green eyes, and freckles. I can still see her hair flow as she moved her head back to laugh at the stupid shit I was saying to her. She was beautiful.
I asked for her phone number so that if I needed more eggs I could call her.
A few weeks later I threw a party at the house and I called her and invited her. She showed up, had some drinks, and we ended up making out.
For some reason, we never really spoke again. I saw her every now and then, and she liked me, but I never called her again. I can't explain why.
She went to Duke, her brother went to Wake Forest, my neighbor went to Yale. The other neighbor, who never came to any of my parties but slept with some of my friends anyways, went to USC undergrad and law. |

I am good friends with one girl whose entire family went there. Her dad is a doctor in the valley and the mom is an alcoholic whom I’ve never seen without a glass of white wine. They throw some great parties but what a fucked up family.
I work at a firm where a bunch of the employees went there and many of their kids go there. Their kids go to sun valley for vacations at 15-16 with a bunch of other kids and a chaperone (not parents). Also most of them end up at tufts and Amherst and other overpriced lib arts garbage schools.
I grew up in NYC around UES prep school kids and it’s the same thing. It’s not something I’d want my kids being exposed to in middle/high school. |

My opinion is that if your kids are smart, private schools provide a better social life for them (the more prestigious the better, usually). That's the main draw. Having good classes and smart teachers is a bonus but the biggest advantage is having smart peers.
The school itself isn't going to help them get into a good university.....they'll be able to do that from any school if they're smart (which they are if they get in to CSUS on merit). |

For somebody who is looking to retire early and have a roughly ~$10m NW like CSLG, yes that’s lighting money on fire or force him to work more years.
Also, what are you trying to get for $80k/year? Prestige? Connections? If that’s the case, there are other cheaper ways to get there, as long as your kids are smart and motivated. If they’re dumb and mediocre, even the prestige and connections won’t mean jack shit and hey end up going to Bowdoin and work for buzzfeed after graduation. |

It's just a horrible place, and a tiny fraction of my income is well worth it to send them to a better one. |

The admissions process into HW is also about important alum/donors vouching for you. They want white people from certain backgrounds (parents attended ivies and have elite jobs) and also have quotas for minorities.

If your dad happens to be a senior guy at Goldman Sachs, your dad runs a hedge fund, or you know those people, somehow you magically get in even if you are competent but not super smart.
Because you went to public school and didn’t have the connections you obviously had to do well to get in. But like any elite high school/college/grad school, the process is not meritocratic and you’d be an idiot to think it is. Maybe you don’t see that side, but working at a hedge fund and being nearly 40, all my coworkers parents have children attending the same schools and are constantly using their connections to do that sort of stuff and it’s all they talk about. |

I essentially never exerted myself intellectually at the time and scored mid 1400s on the SAT and was considered one of the dumber kids despite not taking the exam seriously at all. At least 9 people in my class scored a perfect 1600. There were several people doing advanced college level mathematics and physics at the age of 14-15. It was a totally different level of intelligence from anywhere I have ever been and I was too ignorant to understand it at the time. These people were significantly smarter than any med student/doctor colleague of mine and certainly even more significantly intelligent than anyone in a hedge fund.
I'm not sure why you consider to dispute this despite the fact you have never spent a day on either campus. It's possible things have changed since then with new management and new focus but the place was clearly only for the most intelligent back then. |

I just doubt that a school that does not have a meritocratic admissions process can end up with a student body that is more intelligent than any other similarly situated prep school (Exeter, dalton etc) where connections and legacies mean that a lot of decently competent but not exceptionally smart kids do get in. It mattered 20 years ago and it matters now.
You seem to have your panties in a bunch when I said that the admissions process is not meritocratic and threw in the testing element (which really isn’t an entrance exam). The connections part is what i see from the people I interact with. I don’t really actually care about the intelligence of the student body or admissions since I’m sending my kids to public schools anyway.
Edit: will also add that my skepticism also stems from having attended a school where admissions was solely determined by grades/test scores. |

Hidden Hills is a sweet place to raise kids, they are pretty safe in the gates. The trails are fun too, the place really feels semi-rural. Many of the lots are at least 1 acre (at least in the "old" part). I disagree that you need 5M to start, you can get something nice in HH for ~3M (nothing good is for sale right now, I checked Zillow). Of course, POA is brutal, but that's going to be the case anywhere.
I don't know much about The Oaks, it was built after I left.
EDIT: if you can't tell, if I was living back in the area, I would strongly prefer to live in Hidden Hills. |
