It seems like expectations really shifted afterwards.... People going beyond the extra mile to prove their value. Of course, technology is a part of it too.

Yeah it was actually worse bc it was still 24/7 availability but reading anything on your blackberry sucked so the flashing light meant you were running off to your laptop and then citrix would be gay and then because technology was shitty and it took you 20 minutes to send out a two sentence email you were "slow to respond." Advent of blackberry until about 2012 was the lowest point ever. You already had the PPP squeeze and sociopath boomers controlling everything, but you hadn't quite adapted all of the tools of the job.

I worked with this one senior associate who bitched me out when I took an hour to send something on a Saturday morning because my wife was violently vomiting in the bathroom and I was trying to make sure we weren't about to go to the hospital (and that she wasn't pregnant). This fag was a pathetic loser who did not ever touch a woman he didn't pay by the hour in a hotel room during the entire three years I worked with him. He intentionally rented an apartment that was a two minute walk from the office and would leave to go work out at 7 and then come back a 9 and stay until 1 every night, despite the fact that he apparently didn't bill that much. In retrospect, he had to be a poaster--maybe he's reading this right now! So yeah biglaw didn't lack for apex autist shitheads pre ITE at all, in fact I think the less profitable ones were culled, as this dude was.

No. Life generally was less stressful and that included work. You always knew that if you quit or got laid off you could put yourself back on partnership track somehow, somewhere, after a short delay. There was no one-wrong-move like now.

Good example of the changes in the country overall but a terrible example to offer as support for your laughable claim that getting canned in biglaw pre-ITE was no big deal because someone else would hire you and you were right back on track to partner. By 2005 less than 2% of first year classes in either the v50 or Amlaw 200 (can't remember which) ended up as partners. This was widely understood even back then, sometimes even openly discussed as the trade off for the massive increase in starting salaries in the late 90s.

I was obviously exaggerating. The point is, the entire nation was not a pressure cooker for profits like now. If you lost a job you could find something decent. If you wanted to book a flight it didn’t automatically require $800 and 6 weeks of advance planning.

It all works the same. Boomers call basically anyone younger than them ENTITLED and laugh at their misfortune, no matter how much harder they work than them or how worthy they are.

We do the same thing with Clique/Phenotype.

Also we just laugh at turds who don't make the top 1% cutoff to emigrate and be smelly H1B Engineers. We are like "haha they suck, street shitter," some 130 IQ peasant making one wrong move on his Engineering test so can't emigrate so he has to herd cows while Bobby Birdshit bangs Stacy, life isn't fair.

This seems right. Recall talking to recent law school grads pre ITE talking about jumping around from firm to firm. If shit got too tough, go elsewhere and take a break in between. So many firms were poaching each other's talents. Recessions made firms realize that they can cut the assoc ranks in half and cut perks without any drop in talent. All of a sudden, you had t14 kids crawling over their classmates' dead bodies to get an offer from a V75 firm.

It’s work. It always sucks in some way, details aside. We don’t even know why we do it, we just have to do something with ourselves or else...what? Who knows what would happen if for once we just looked at ourselves honestly, threw up our arms and said “enough with this error of conscious life”. The entire world might go up in smoke or a swirling vortex could swallow us into the earth’s core.

In the early 2000s people had email and shit but they weren't expected to check it 24/7. Work still generally stopped when you got home.

The fundamental difference is that, for the first time in human history, we've completely erased the line between work and personal time. Work is a constant endeavor. Its awful roar might get quieter during "personal time" but it's still lingering in your mind, just one phone buzz away.

And they snickered--and initially we believed them--when they said that this was "increased flexibility" that would permit you to go to your son's t-ball games and your daughter's school play without fear because you could still be responsive. Nope! Instead, it means that the first thing you do in the morning, the last thing you do at night, and the thing you're expected to do at least once every hour in between is to check your email, oh and preferably be on Skype, too, oh and some assholes will just text, and some clients will ask for your "WhatsApp" or ask you to join their in-house Slack. Oh, vacation? Just "check-in" in the morning and in the evening, unless there's an emergency--and there's always an emergency. It never stops.

ITE taught GC it could get a lot more for a lot less. It trimmed the "fat". There was a lot of unnecessary excess but it was benefiting Mr and Mrs America. The "fat" we had before, is now just a whiff of a memory. GC effectively learned it could collectively lower everyone's standards even when the getting was good again, and soon enough, people forgot even how it was before...

Work was just as bad. It's that everything else has become so much worse that work is so less tolerable

Work was terrible and lol @ "you weren't expected to be on 24/7." I remember before there were blackberries my mom getting calls at 3am because she was "on call" that evening (she was a DBA at a major company). She would run to her laptop and work until whenever.

The difference is that ITE has burned "one wrong move" into our skulls, so everyone is TERRIFIED that they could lose anything at any moment and end up with an ITE-like job-hunt (read: thousands of resumes sent, no real prospects or shitty prospects). That leads to a totally different work culture and view of work/career generally. If people were actually confident that if they did a good job they would be fine and if they lost their job for some reason they would quickly find something as good or better then the current perspective on modern work would be totally different.

Your second paragraph is such a common theme now. I see it with all my colleagues. They'll bitch and moan about low pay but won't jump ship (some) in part bc of fear of LIFO.

Tcr. And that impacts the whole market. Employees don't jump ship so employers realize they don't have to pay more or treat employees better to keep them. Before you know it, you end up surrounded by miserable people at a miserable job and wondering why things feel depressing. In short, this is why.

That's kind of a lazy take. Boomers would have been pussies too if they were living in "one wrong move" world instead of "ah, if it doesn't work out I'll just get another job in a week with a raise without even having to really interview" world.

80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and don’t have more than $1000 in their bank account. One wrong move isn’t just a humiliating state of affairs for the employee from an ego standpoint, it’s also the difference between having enough money to buy food and pay rent next month

Perhaps, but I suspect that this was always true for that bottom 80%. The next 19% or so are middle and UMC and those are who I think have really seen their QOL and sense of stability go to shit.

To put it another way - both of my parents worked for decades in management level positions and both retired with pensions. Pretty much none of us expect that.

Yea, not to mention that boomers are staying on longer and when they retire their positions are now mysteriously no longer needed.

Well yeah, "younger" boomers no longer have pensions.

We're all going to be working for as long as we can hang on for.

"Employees" at "jobs" that require skills and strict resume filtering are like top 20% minimum. Seemingly every single job that isn't liberal arts pays like $60k minimum which is on par with average HHI.

employees jumping ship every few years and risking LIFO has become the norm over the last few years though, and massively increased since the boomers were our age

A partner told me he worked 3 times less before there was internet. They would have to mail or fax drafts back and forth and they would do one draft a day. Now he might send 3 drafts a day.

You spent a lot more time on stupid shit like doing book research rather than a 2-second search on Google or Lexis, sitting around and waiting for doc delivery/faxes, etc. Now you can at least be at home waiting for an email on your phone. So yeah, productivity is much higher but time in the office isn't necessarily higher. And a lot of that "waiting around" time wasn't actually billable.

Rather than argue about this, I'm just going to focus instead on the fact that you were sitting in some shitty office surrounded by shitty lawyers instead of at home with your friends and family.

True. But the point is that you still spent quite a few evenings in the office.

I'd rather do what I do now, which is rarely be in the office even if I have to answer some emails in the evenings and weekends.
