I play very infrequently these days (2-5 times a year). Even when I played 15-20 rounds a year when I was younger this would crop up. Some rounds, I seem unable to release the club through impact, sort of short-arm everything, don't slice but hit it straight or slight push to the right and lose like 1-2 clubs distance on everything. The ball just doesn't keep climbing after I hit, just falls away like a weak cumshot.

Any good drills?

loosen you grip and don't swing so hard. golf is counter intuitive like that and you have to train yourself to do shit that doesn't make sense. example: for years i tried to control the ball flight on my wedges by gripping tight, swinging hard and hitting down, thinking the face would stay shut. reality is it just produced a higher flight i couldn't control. having softer arms and letting your wrists release but at a slower pace actually puts a lower flight with spin in there.

Thanks. Yeah, I sometimes have that issue with my short irons where the ball just balloons up with little spin and doesn't carry as far as it should because I'm laying the club open on impact.

pumo above is correct. maybe you're tensing up or death gripping it? honestly, it really could be anything from having an open clubface to a path issue.

Having said that, Google "ulnar deviation golf". Almost every time I'm struggling with my contact it's because I'm not getting enough wristcock/wrist-set and/or I'm not releasing those wrist angles at impact. It's the chopping wood (and not just chopping it, but driving the axe all the way through the wood and into the ground) feel. Add this to a good downswing path and you'll be compressing the hell out of the ball.

loosen grip, maybe break the wrist a little bit. it’s not kosher, but breaking my wrist like I’m playing baseball sends my shots 200+ w/ 8 iron and below

google “wrist hinge”

what does "breaking my wrist" mean? every decent golfer cocks/hinges on the backswing and uncocks/unhinges on the downswing.
