Playing in my first scratch tournament in 22 years this week. Getting really nervous. Played on Saturday and shanked three shots, including two full iron shots, and also developed a two way miss with my driver.

Any advice for this week and the morning of the tournament?

Did not make the cut, but proud of how I played. Shot even on front and +5 on back. Course was tipped out and fucking hard. Pins were not set up for scoring. 7250 yards at sea level. 75.1/142.

It was a four ball scratch tournament. I shot 77 on my ball and we shot 74 as a team. 73 would have gotten us into the playoff (that number should tell you how hard the course was playing). My teammate is a former college golfer and I was counting on him to carry the load, but he played 10 strokes worse than during our practice round.

Overall, it was fun and has made me want to play more tourneys. I'm playing in another event on 11/3.

Shot my best tournament round ever this morning. Even par 72 at Torrey Pines South Course. I was -1 and in the back bunker after second shot on 18. Super easy shot, great lie, but I choked and fucking shanked it. Made bogey 6.

It was a net tourney, so something like -9. Low gross was 67. We played the whites (6600) and rough was cut short, so it played way easier than usual. No way I shoot 72 under normal conditions. Still, pretty excited about the result. If I could clean up my short game and roll the putter a little better, I think I can start breaking par with some regularity. My ball-striking is pretty solid now (15/18 GIR).

ty brother

just looking at my stats, what's crazy is that I only had 8 two-putts. Very boom or bust on the greens. I had five birdies and none of them were longer than 9'. Had 4 three-putts and they were all when I left my approach above the hole. Greens were rolling FAST yesterday.

Nice! As long as you can walk away from a round with a positive memory it's a good day of golf.

I've played a few USO and Mid Am qualifiers before and some local SCGA/MGA events before. You are going to be playing against guys who have +2 or 3 handis so just realize you have no chance of winning and try to enjoy it. Also brush up on your rules of golf so you don't look like an idiot with a dumb rules violation.

Yeah, that's my goal. Get my cap low enough to play in the US Open qualifier. I wanted to play in the SCGA mid-am this year, but missed the cut-off.

I played in the SCGA four-ball and finished firmly in the top-half of the field on my own ball. I don't expect to win anything anytime soon, but I'm trending in the right direction. Next big thing I play in will be the San Diego City Championship. That attracts a lot of +caps and college golfers.

I'm usually square in the middle of the field. Missed qualifying for sectionals by one stroke once and came within one of qualifying for the Mid Am. I mainly play to help keep my game sharp and help me stay motivated to continue improving.

Nice. That's pretty impressive.

What's funny is that if guys like us just roll up to your typical public golf course on a weekend and get paired with randoms, they think we are almost professional level players. Then you show up to these regional/national qualifiers with real players, get to the range, look to your left and right, and think "what the hell am I doing here?"

I can play with pretty much anyone driver through PW. Touring pros and top amateurs have a supernatural ability on and around the greens. These guys will make 8-9/10 putts from 15 feet no problem where I'm lucky if I could drain 6.

If you made 6/10 15 footers you'd be the greatest putter in PGA history. PGA tour average is about 30%.

https://www.pgatour.com/stats/stat.405.y2019.html

Your, and most ams', problem is not hitting it close enough, often enough, with your approach shots.
