How are the commuter rails in DC?

The MARC trains connect suburban Maryland with DC, and the VRE trains connect suburban Virginia with DC. The systems do not cross over, so you cannot take a single commuter rail train from Maryland to Virginia. Trains run only during rush hour, directionally, of course (as is typical for commuter rail) and the VRE does not run on weekends at all.
I hear these trains are now crowded with refugees from the DC Metro, now that that system has gone to shit.

MARC into Maryland, and it stops within driving distance of West Virginia burbs. VRE into Virginia.
One bonus on some lines is that there also duplicate Amtrak service for a little bit extra if you need a different train.
