DrakeMallard, had a chance to do any MS Access stuff?

Let me know if/how that is coming along.

Total waste of time. You have to do these weird command line things just to set up a database. Access does all that for you.

Why learn things when you don't have to?

there's almost no chance you need a database to solve your problem, let alone one that was already shitty and obsolete in the 90's.

Probably 80 percent plus of what people are doing in Excel needs to be done with a relational database, and Access is the only one with a GUI that most people have available. And open-source ButtPlugSQL is not going to cut it either.

ExcelDNA. It’s fucking easy to use both a real database and excel’s GUI. But again, I really doubt anything that a dumbfuck like yourself is doing requires or even benefits from a database.

Literally the one post I never even mentioned Access in. This helps explain why you think Access is a good idea, though.

MS Access is awesome. I draw strength from the fedora crowd's hatred of it.

There's precisely ONE video on all of YouTube, with its trillions of videos, talking about MS Access as a career booster. And it's some startup dork who complains about it not being a relational database (hint: it is). Unfuckingbelievable. The neckbeard crowd has really destroyed tech.

Agreed that many companies and people would be better off if they knew how to use Access. So many people use Excel for things it's not meant for that Access would be a better option. And if you know Access, jumping up to SQL Server or equivalent isn't hard.

Big Excel user here, the gap between the usability of Excel and Access is huge. I realize that half of what I am doing should be done in Access or R, but fuck learning those things.

Nah I hear you - the user-friendliness of Access is poor.

Access consists of:

Tables, which store raw uncalculated data.

Queries, which manipulate and calculate one or more table(s). These are not directly editable like tables are. Basically they store commands for working with tables' data.

and Reports, which display the results of queries, and/or tables, in a non-table format. You can put the results of different tables and queries together, highlight stuff, format to show new pages, etc. Access' report making function is top of the line.

If it helps any, what people are often doing with pivot tables in Excel would qualify as reports in Access.

So the key thing is to "normalize" your data and get it into tables. Tables should store raw data, not calculated data like totals, averages, etc. That is what queries and reports are for. So if you want to move an Excel spreadsheet into Access directly as a data table (which can be done) you don't want it to take on the totals, averages, etc., you want that done by a separate query.

Tables and queries have to show data in a normalized format, meaning the same type of data shows up in each row within a column, all the way down, forever. And each table and each query handles one "thing" so you would want different tables to handle different "things" and then connect to each other in other queries.

But yeah - it's hard to get this presented in a more hand-holding way. Not being insulting.
