Cold weather? Summer?

I have like 6-7 Simms jackets and they’re all awesome. I’m mainly out in the elements and I don’t like to be cold. The insulated “Contender” line is really good and light weight.

I still have a bunch of Cabela’s guidewear that has held up really well from when I was guiding. The bibs are shot, but they’re still functional and have held up to crazy abuse. Don’t get the insulated cabelas guidewear.

I usually just want a good waterproof shell and then layer underneath if it's going to be cold. I've got an entry-level Simms wading jacket but I don't like the length and it looks showing some wear in some areas.

Looks like Simms may have discontinued the Contender jacket.

You can find discontinued items on Fly Shack. Really good prices too. I have a Simms Contender jacket that's uninsulated as well. If you like to layer, the uninsulated jacket is bomber and completely water proof. My only dislike is the obnoxious SIMMS on the side of the arm.

If you're looking for a wading jacket, they're all going to be really short around the waist. I found a used Simms G3 on ebay for $100 that was a few years old, but basically brand new.

What I want is a wading-style jacket (i.e., has good pockets for lure boxes, D rings, etc.) but the length of a normal rain jacket or ski/snowboarding jacket.

I found a few options online with the contender, but I don't think I can return them easily if I don't like it when it's delivered.

Yeah, I don't know of any like that.

I think Filson has a few actually. But, I hate their products.

I just ordered a Patagonia River Salt for 20% off (still fucking pricey though). I'm not a huge fan of Patagonia due to their anti-hatchery stances, but I think the pockets are big enough and it's a 4-layer tough jacket. I'll just return it if it doesn't meet my needs.

Edit: I *just* got a Hodgman Aesis shell jacket delivered by Amazon. I like it. Might keep this one (although I'd like to hear some feedback from people who have actually tested this model in the rain)

Nice

Did you check Orvis at all?

What is Patagonia's hatchery stance? What is yours?

We used to have a hatchery on the Kasilof, but I don't think it's been operational in years. On many days, we're only allowed to keep hatchery kings, which I don't mind.

Dammit, the chest pockets on the Aesis jacket that was just delivered are just barely too small for the lure box I like to carry.

I think hatcheries can be beneficial, depending on how they are run, especially since Southern Resident Orcas depend on (mostly) king salmon and the king salmon runs around here aren't going to get any better any time soon without hatchery supplementation. Patagonia appears to be anti-hatchery (without exception I guess).

Maybe. I don't want to fuck up the cardboard tags if I'm going to return it. Plus that doesn't really mimic real world use.

River Salt just came. The pockets are big enough for my lure boxes and my wife likes the look. Might keep this one, even though it's still a tad shorter in the front than I'd like.

Looks sharp.

This is the one I use, love the big pockets. It's bullet proof and breathes well
