Do law schools give financial aid any more? Is it all loans? The tuition prices seem ridiculous now.

OP, YHS are the only schools that give meaningful need based aid. The price is still too high if you max it out

some break it down between merit aid and need-based aid, and then add a rather insulting caveat that there is an expectation that recipients of need-based aid will pay it back in full. others don't distinguish between the two. schools have also started penalizing students for summering at a large law firm. i.e., in the past, the school would give the student 60K, 20K for each year; now, it would give 50K, 20K for the first two years, and only 10K for the last year. although tuition and room have risen sharply, aid is still stagnant and nominal. tuition and room at CCN might add up to 80K per year (240K total), but "generous" awards are still 30K, 60K, or 90K total--or as I described above, 20K, 50K, 80K total.

Has anybody here recently been through the decision process of deciding whether to go law school? Seems not make economic sense for most people at these prices. At least Nutella's jumbo mortgage gives her a house to live in. A J.D., more than many degrees, is just a piece of toilet paper without many adjuvants added.

Probably have some idea. I have lived in SoCal and the Bay area. My Palo Alto mortgage was 3.7x my base salary. Did not like it. Left there 30 years ago -lost $100K (13%) not including expenses of sale. LA crashed at about the same time.

There are huge geographic differences. 20 years ago I dropped out of striving and paid $550K for a 4700 sq ft finished + 4000 sq ft basement + barn + 40 acres house in Are County. Could not sell it for that today, but we have another house in a warm place that has appreciated maybe 30% in the past 8 years, following the great crash of 2009. Decided long ago not to regard a house as investment, but as just a place to live.

What kind of shithole do you have to live in to not be able to sell 40 acres for $550k? And you only have 10 years of mortgage left. So you would make money even if you sold for a “loss.” And that’s before the money you saved taking the interest deduction.

Rural land goes for about $5K/acre where I am. It's a very nice area near a pleasant, economically viable small town and a couple of small universities, one of which is "prestigious." I have no mortgage and am not interested in selling or making money. Just pointing out that real estate is hugely location dependent (surprise!).

What are you doing?

If you went to YHS and aren't a $200k/year law professor working 8-12 hours per week while relaxing on a campus wearing a tweed jacket, you've messed up. That is the only 180 outcome in law.

making decent money doing something "prestigious," but it's been a bumpy road. ite sucks and just having yhs on your resume and being quite competent won't necessarily prevent you from getting fucked.

They're giving out more merit-based scholarships, but the "aid" is essentially all loans.

They'll also do some low-key status matching. I was offered a full ride from a not-as-good school, and went to a couple T6 schools I was admitted with that offer; I didn't get a full match, but it led to at least getting something. Obviously YLS doesn't give a shit about your Touro scholarship, but within the T14 they'll sometimes be competitive.

CCN doesn't care about non-T6 and the most Penn will do is match your CCN award, then deduct for COL.
