If you want a newer home that doesn't need a shit ton of work in Southern California you are pretty much forced to accept this. The alternative is paying $1M for a house that needs extensive remodeling and your neighbors are all 55 year old proles who bought for $200K 20 years ago.
New neighborhoods are filled with kids, have tons of amenities (hiking trails, gyms, pools, tons of parks, athletic complexes), and have their own schools so you aren't forced to send your kid to private schools. These fees basically replace private school tuition. |

Their second home is in an HOA. As others say, $80/month is a small price to pay to make sure your neighborhood doesn't end up having half-painted houses with 11 chihuahuas yipping and shitting all over the yard. |
