Yes, the Uighurs are Muslims but did they ever bother China?

Like we know the Chechens are separatists Islamic d-bags so Russia would have to go in occasionally and beat the shit out of them to keep them in line, but I don't ever recall Uighurs causing China Proper problems, or them doing anything to deserve this Han crackdown other than be Muslim and the Chinks want to pre-emptively clamp down on them 'realizing' this one day.
Am I wrong?

If they were Chechen-esque in behavior, I could see this response making more sense.
But China seems to be genociding them pre-emptively. They may actually provoke the exact reaction from that population they were trying to prevent.
The Uighurs will never forgive China for this.

That part of China has always sort of been loosely connected to Han China proper since the Tang dynasty because of the distance, vast open nature of the land and the multiple ethnicity, religions and languages in that area and due to that fact periodically the Chinese have to reassert control violently.
There have been rebellions in/near that area over the course of history such as the Dzungar rebellion - this was when a people called the Dzungars who were in/near the Xinjiang area in the 1700's rose up. They were not Muslim I don't think but they were in the same area.
The reason you haven't heard of these people in the modern era is that they were all wiped out to the last man by a Qing emperor (himself an ethnic Manchu) in the 1700s.
What is going on is basically a continuation of that genocidal trend but we are in the very early innings of it right now.
