office space I am eyeing in the future might include westlaw in the rent

You don't need all this crap to open a business. Start with the cheapest stuff possible, then upgrade as you can afford it only when absolutely necessary.
It's not so much the spending 3 grand, it's that you have to have an attitude of constantly trying to maximize your profits, by raising revenue and lowering expenses.

yeah but a lot of this is what I need at a minimum. I need Adobe Acrobat and Office, for example. I need a printer. Need a scanner. I can't do what I do without them, I use them every single day currently.
Shit like the desk and chair are more luxuries, but oh well, thats like $1000
The lamp ($230) is a splurge, no doubt.

I had a serial expire after a week once, but they immediately sent another, which worked. And, in that case, it might have been my fault.
If you look for sellers with lots of sales and good feedback scores, you'll probably be fine.
In other news, eBay is also a great place to get updated maps for cars instead of going to the dealer.

Get this printer instead and don't buy a scanner. I have a very high volume practice and this works fine for printing and scanning. You don't need color printing either: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0763X6TCW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Also, don't buy a hard copy of adobe pro. Buy adobe document cloud and adobe sign. Do all your retainers/releases by electronic signature.
For Microsoft just do Microsoft Office 365. It gives you 5 licenses and you can create 5 accounts on top of that (each with 5 licenses). This means you can use it on 25 computers for one annual fee.
Use Asana for task management.
You don't need a label printer. Just print directly onto your envelopes. No one gives a shit.

Thanks
Is office 365 the exact same programs as the stand alone office? You can use them offline and stuff?
Does asana do billing?
Label printer would be a lot for printing postage.
I’ll look into that adobe thing. I would be doing more than just retainer/esigning
Any recs on cloud server company? I just want to keep client files on it and let me back it up to a physical hard drive or my own PC. I’m sure this is simple but I know nothing about this stuff

Yes, Office 365 can be used offline. You install it onto your computer.
Asana is just task management.
Get a Pitney Bowes machine for postage (they are cheap).
Adobe document cloud lets you edit and alter pdfs any way you need.
Get dropbox or google drive for your file storage.

I use google drive which auto syncs certain folders so I can effectively throw my computer in the ocean, open a brand new computer login and have immediate access to my files.
Dropbox is fine also, CSLG uses it and it’s great. Both are very cheap.
One thing you may want is a gsuite account, you can run your email through it doodikoff@doodikoff.org and you get something like unlimited storage for like 8 dollars a month.
Look into quickbooks online. I use that rather than the desktop version and it’s been incredibly easy working with my CPA because she can just login anytime and everything will be there in real time (syncs with bank accounts and business credit card).

I also have the printer CSLG recommended and it's great for everything you'll probably need.
Also, check ebay for scan snaps and other office equipment type stuff. I bought my work computer off there a 4 yr old thinkpad x1 carbon for like 350 dollars and it works great. Wiped it and installed Windows Enterprise which I was able to locate through reddit along with like a student account of office or something.
Also bought two monitors off ebay, two docking stations and scan snaps for office and home, etc. All work great and were 1/5 the price for the same items on amazon.
Adobe I pay 14 dollars a month for pro and get the docu-sign as part of that package, it's well worth it.

looks almost identical to mine so I would rate it 180. I believe it came out in 2015. I love mine with the exception of the screen which leaves something to be desired if you're working directly off the laptop. It's not particularly bright.
Here's a review: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Ultrabook-Review.138033.0.html
Just make sure you read the seller reviews on Ebay and see what they commonly sell. Many are pro sellers who buy up huge quantities of off lease corporate machines, refurb them and re-sell them. These are general the best guys to buy from. Monitors and docking stations are generally relatively easy to tell if they work just by reading the item description.
However, 99% of the time mine is hooked up to an external monitor and it's great. After a year or two if you're making money, you can upgrade and use it as a tax write off.
The one other thing is no matter what you buy you should wipe it completely and reinstall a new version of Windows. Easy to do. I highly recommend Enterprise if you can find a license. I found a version that came with just the bare bones of windows meaning absolutely no bloatware and it only updates once in a while with essential security updates. I'll see if I can figure out where I got it and link to it.

COLOR 4 LYFE. I barely even work, and I can't imagine wasting time running around to a print shop to get, say, mediation, arbitration, or motion exhibits printed and then, on top of all of that, lacking the ability add late or updated exhibits. And it's extremely common for me to receive documents with color.
Acrobat DC isn't better than 2017 for normal pdf creation and editing. Its advantage is mobile use, some cloud features, and integration with Sign.
I've never used Sign, so I don't have any comment there. But I would note that there are many electronic signing options. For instance, Clio Grow is integrated with all the Clio stuff. DocuSign is everywhere. And there are a zillion little cheaper services (e.g., SignNow and Sign Request).
As for Office, why does he need 5, much less 25, licenses? It sounds like he's one dude. [edit - Office 365 might be a good idea if he wants to use Outlook for email and store his emails in the ☁️. That's perfectly reasonable.]
Printing directly on regular A10 envelopes is fine. I'd say it looks better in most cases. And that's generally what I do. But that doesn't work for, say, 9x12 envelopes, which are pretty common for me. If he's doing real estate work, I imagine he has a lot of mail that isn't regular A10 envelopes.

wrt printer, yeah, no
you buy a commercial printer that originally cost $10,000+ and is used.
you don't buy some piece of shit $300 printer and think it will suffice.
the commercial printers can be purchased for under $2,000 and will shit on your $300 piece of shit

this is fine, it's fine.
But my advice is that before I went solo I spent a *ton* of time doing this kind of comparison shopping about what "supplies" I needed and I later realized it didn't matter at all; all this work was essentially a waste of time. It's perfectly fine to just have a laptop, a printer, a scanner, and a couple notepads. worst case you later find yourself having to run to Office Depot or Best Buy a couple times. There are more important things you should be doing.

I recommend the ScanSnap. You can get decent ones for under 100 on ebay and they're way faster then scanning with a printer. They also scan in relatively high definition, can do single or double sided which is crucial and can handle large page numbers.
The interface is easy to use as well.
I have the brother CSLG recommended and its great for printing docs and scans fine but i definitely use my scan snap way more. It also can be set to auto OCR everything it scans.

you need three good staplers.
one of the regular 2-20 sheet staplers.
one of the 15-60 intermediate staplers -- and this is the all too often neglected category.
one of the big ass swing arm staplers.

just discovered on godaddy that they have a .law domain.
I can literally get michael@doodikoff.law with my IRL name. It just costs $130/year instead of $15/year (but maybe that is for personal websites only and business sites always cost a lot more?).

another question for the "been there done that" solos ITT:
I want to use legal size folder with fasteners, like this:
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Manila-File-Folders-Fasteners/dp/B072WXCFWC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?
However, I only want the folder label on the left side. Everything Ive seen on amazon or at office depot it mixed with the label being on the left, middle and right positions. Is it possible to just get them on the far left position, and what is the name for this so that I can search for it? Amazon links seem to call this the "cut"

registered with firm LLC with my state secretary of state tonight, got a new gmail for my company, and snagged a really awesome google voice number (easy to remember, similar to a 255-1255 type of number)
Once my LLC name is accepted and registered, I'm setting up bank account and biz credit card.

also freedom, and I'm at a place in my career where I am almost self sufficient 98% of the time with my own clients that I brought in myself but my firm takes most of what I bill.
and I have a few friends that are going to help me out (including several in PI), at least so they say. and I lined up a pretty nice part time corporate work contract gig (they estimate 10-20 hours a week of work) to start out that should help me stay afloat while I build in other areas.
