I would not take Foles over Wilson, but that's both a combination of objective metrics and clutch performances. Foles has one great clutch half season. That doesn't compare to Wilson even if you throw out the other objective metrics.

I'd take someone with both (a) great objective metrics, (b) great "eye test" (which can evaluate for the quality of other players on the team, like O line), and (c) a consistent history of playing at his best when it matters most (i.e., Russel Wilson), over someone who is slightly better in two of those categories, but significantly worse in the remaining category.

What other team sells jerseys for the “12th man”? They also brag incessantly about the loudness of their fans, but their stadium is designed in a way that amplifies sound.

Same with Wilson. He's got a better deep ball than anyone in the NFL. They've got very similar stats this year, and Russel has a better/longer track record.

High arcing passes are functional, dude. That's how you drop it over the defensive back and put the ball where only your receiver can get it.

Or you can rifle the pass so fast defenders can't react quickly enough to make a play on the ball. Mahomes can fortunately do both.

I don't watch Mahomes as much as I watch Wilson, but I have not seen him make the intermediate and deep "touch" passes that Wilson consistently makes. On the other hand, Wilson can get as much velocity on a throw as just about anyone, although his release is not as quick.

It was a perfectly placed back shoulder throw that was disrupted because the cornerback pushed the TE out of the way.

There was a saftey bracketing Kelce, that was literally the only spot Mahomes could have put it without it being intercepted or having Kelce concussed.

(guy who hasn't watched enough Russel Wilson)

Edit: At any rate, none of those plays are that impressive to someone who watches every Russel Wilson game. Mahomes is like a younger Wilson with better pass protection and not as much touch on his deep ball (from what I've seen). He's great, but Wilson can make any one of those plays, and regularly makes plays like them (although Wilson doesn't run past the line of scrimmage as much as he used to).

If the QB plays as well as his contract dictates it isn't. If anything QBs are underpaid relative to their value.

Brady had the best Super Bowl performance by a QB EVER against the Eagles. He lost because the defense turned into the 2008 Lions unit in the last game of the season. Before that, the best Super Bowl performance ever was by Matt Ryan. Brees lost out on a probably Super Bowl appearance last season because a defensive back forgot to tackle.

These guys didn't fall short of a championship because too much of the cap was tied up in their salaries, they lost because of luck/the team picking the worst time in the season to collapse. Is it *easier* to win if your QB makes peanuts? Of course. but elite QBs can play well enough to overcome that hurdle. That's why they're paid that much.

Brady is an anomaly. I have no idea how the Patriots are consistently able to reform a top team around Brady year after year.

Brees and Rodgers are good examples that show how hard it is to win when a bunch of money is tied up in the QB position, because nobody contests how good they are, yet they may end their careers with only 1 Super Bowl appearance.

Rodgers and Brees have both been on teams good enough to win Super Bowls. Both teams were good enough to win a Super Bowl this year! You can't just look at a W-L record and try to analyze long term trends.

Two seasons ago, the strength of the Saints defense was the secondary. They drafted *two* defensive backs in the 2nd round, who were both really good as rookies. And what happens? One of those good rookies whiffs on a tackle and allows a 61 yard walkoff touchdown.

The season after that, the Saints miss out on the Super Bowl because of a blatant missed DPI. They were clearly the better team in that game, and still lost. Did they lose because Brees made too much? Of course not.

It's amazing to me that someone can look at the Saints over the past 3 seasons and think 'this team isn't good enough to win a Super Bowl".

Yeah, when you wrap up a lot of $$$ in other positions, you have to play rookie defensive backs. You basically have to do really well drafting and developing young talent *and* make good bets on the veteran talent you're paying $$$ in order to win a championship. That's really fucking hard.
