She talked about wanting to lose weight, take better care of her skin, and some work stuff related to a promotion she just got. Also mentioned wanting to travel more and for longer vacations. After I shared mine (mostly wanting to spend more time with family and friends), she mentioned that it would be a great opportunity to learn Python and Ruby this year. I learned basic SQL last year and barely use it (currently doing something similar to corp development), which she said was a waste. She said I could get a higher paying more technical job at a startup with unlimited PTO.
I do want to leave my company this year, but was surprised at this proposal because I'd been thinking of trying to get a corp dev/finance job at a tech company rather than going full code monkey. My gf has said how much smarter I am than the coders she works with (she does marketing at a startup) but I assumed this was flattery. Her reasons seem pretty transparent and I am underpaid for my role, but I'm concerned about her suggesting such a drastic change to push the process along. We've been dating for 2 1/2 years, both in mid 20s. |

I know several couples who ‘learned to code’ and did bootcamps together a couple years ago and it’s insane how much better the returns were for women - the men now just doing tech support or stay at home dadding vs women who are now ‘senior developers’ etc, got handed jobs and promotions as fast as possible
This makes total sense btw - most places have a mix of real engineers and seat fillers, if you’re hiring a libarts dork career changer who will almost certainly be a seat filler, it might as well be a woman (for a variety of reasons, not JUST female AA)

Got a referral from a former client for a position in the finance dept, and they had me interview for this at the same time. They apparently had trouble finding candidates because the company was going through a merger at the time. |

Date: January 14th, 2020 11:21 AM Author: Contagious Magenta Church National Security Agency I agree. That's why her suggestion took me by surprise. I never expressed interest in full on software engineering and even told her that learning SQL for my current job was annoying.
I was too lazy during undergrad to study CS and regret it somewhat. But I've managed to do alright for myself regardless, have a few years exp in a stable megacorp job, and have the potential to make more money (low six figures) in the near future. So what's the rush to a mid six figure salary when we're in our mid 20s and living better than we ever have as adults? (Our parents are middle class so it's not like she's used to being rich.) We take vacations every other month so it was surprising to hear that wasn't enough for her.
I guess I'm just frustrated that she's more of a striver and I didn't see that before now. |
