Have hard from several sources that this thing is worse than useless. Like, there are so many false alarms that you’ll either ignore it completely or wake up 50x per night and kill yourself (either intentionally or unintentionally due to fatigue).

And that money is the difference between you and your wife having five months of actual nights of sleep... or not. Its worth it. You can find used ones for like 700 or I think you can rent them.

Also its a good sids/safety measure

SIDS is basically a few drugged-out ghetto blacks neglecting their babies. But ofcourse NEJM cannot say that so it's made out to be some huge societal/medical issue. It's really not. No one on this board knows anyone personally or tangentially that died of SIDS. And no one will for as long as they live. It just doesn't happen to normal people.

Good stuff mentioned above but I didn't see a bottle warmer: If / when you start bottle feeding (even pumped milk that you store in the fridge), it's worth getting one of these for $20-30. You just push a button and it heats the bottle to the right temp rather than worrying that you're going to scald zher or that xie will reject cold milk and then you have to get up with a hungry and unhappy baby and heat it more.

We like Diaper Genie. Some people just dump the diaper pail daily, but my wife doesn't, so this thing saves a stinky house despite the bags costing 10x a normal garbage bag.

No, plastic, but we only heat the body of the bottle and not the other 4 parts. Agreed and we avoid storing food in plastic and heating plastic in the microwave but you can't strive for 100% purity.

Lol, this is now a full mommy blog.

Kids are used to 98-degree milk. It's jarring to give them 36-degree milk out of the fridge sometimes. Not "warm," just heated to body temp. I don't see the issue. What are the troubles later? My kids are fine.

They're "used to it" from the tits, bro. I didn't make the human body 98 degrees.

I'm talking about infants (<1 year old). We breast and bottle fed so didn't alternate between 98-degree milk and 38-degree milk.

No way, carriers are awesome. Depending on where you are (especially parks, etc), strollers can be unwieldy. Bjorn is how I survived the grocery store. If you just keep the kid in the carseat and he wakes up, you're fucked. In a Bjorn they're either excited to be looking around, or they fall asleep. When they get older you can wear them facing out (though I don't recommend that at the grocery store) and they get really excited. If you get the one with lumbar support, you can easily wear them for over an hour. Much easier to run errands this way than dragging the stroller in and out of the car.

Get a Dekor diaper pail. It has a continuous diaper bag. It is 180.

congrats. what season will your baby be born? i think you said you were in brooklyn. have you joined any of the local parent groups? i know they can seem creepy but we found them really helpful, especially with our first.

Oh wow, super soon! Congrats!!

For sure a lot of them are kind of nuts but there's such a density of families here, you're bound to find some other new parents you click with. Finding other super local parent friends was the most helpful thing to me. We don't have family nearby and most of our existing friends were childless, so we needed to build our own groups of parent friends we could rely on for commiseration and support and play dates and such, especially for the time after relatives stopped visiting. There's probably subgroups for other new parents in your neighborhood having babies in March. Yeah, a lot of them will be nuts or you won't agree with their parenting styles or whatever, but you'll also find people you like and can trade babysitting with and call in the middle of the night if something comes up. And even the crazies will know shit you don't and you can learn from each other.

PSP is huge and the classifieds are the best. If you're not in PS proper, there are probably other ones for your neighborhood too.

Fisher Price foot piano is good around months 2-6. My kid got a ton of entertainment out of it.

Bright Starts bouncy chair is like $20 and is great. Don’t waste your money on the baby bjorn version because they will outgrew it after a few months.

If flying with the baby then get a cheapo snap n go stroller that you can put the car seat in. Much easier than flying with a regular stroller plus car seat.

Don’t buy a snoo unless your kid has problems sleeping.

Get a playmat that plays music, has dangly toys, etc. This in addition to a bouncy chair and a swing (NOT a glider) will be godsends when you just want him entertained for a while.

I loved my Bjorn as stated above, just make sure to get something with lumbar support. It might be tough on your back the first few times, but once you get used to it it's awesome. I wore them up to 18 months and could go at least an hour at a time.

Get a musical mobile for the crib. Bonus if it has a separate button you can trigger it with. Very nice way to get see if baby will go back to sleep if he wakes up during the night.

I loved the Bjorn travel crib for trips to visit family, but there might be other/better options at this point. It sets up in about 30 seconds though and is nice and light.

It’s a bouncer for newborns that’s on an incline. For babies who have reflux etc (many do) who have trouble sleeping flat down, it helps them sleep/nap better. Both my kids slept in a rock n play as newborns and it was the only thing that kept them sleeping for 3-4 hour stretches. It’s way better than a bassinet. It has a clip/restraint that you’re supposed to use to make sure the baby doesn’t roll over. It is not advertised or supposed to be used for sleep, but many parents do. Problem is you’re supposed to supervise your child in it and you’re also not supposed to use it beyond 3-4 months old. There were parents putting their 9 month old to sleep in it at night without the restraint and the baby would roll over and suffocate. There were like 30 deaths over a 5 year period and it got recalled for being “unsafe.” Fucking idiots ruined it for everyone.

Rock and play has caused dozens of deaths even when used completely correctly. It’s a death trap. Dozens of deaths without kids rolling over.

I got a munchkin as a gift for my last kid and it works well. A lot better than ubbi. Everyone loves diaper genie also. I tried once to use one and couldn’t figure it out.

Ubbi is just a regular trash can with a small circle opening. It doesn’t do a great job with the smell and the bags are too wide so it creates like a suction effect when you try to get the bag out. Bags end up breaking all the time.

When my kid shits we just put it in a regular plastic bag usually and take it out right away.

Baby Breeza - its basically a Keurig for baby formula. It's the best baby thing we own by far. You just push how many ounces you want and it pumps out a perfectly mixed, perfect temperature bottle.

Also - my best baby advice is don't be afraid to put the baby on formula after a bit. The hospital is going to scream at you that it is basically child abuse to give them formula, but for whatever reason (probably global capitalism), many women today just don't produce enough milk. So if your 3-month old is crying all the time start offering it some formula and you might find out that he's really just starving...

loud white noise overnight

they can sleep through the night sooner than you'd think assuming no weight/health problems, u can start reducing night feedings at 8 weeks and sleep thru the night by 10-12. if ur wife isn't milk truck, formula on the last feeding will have him sleeping longer and make this process easier

use diapers that are one size up overnight (the 12 hour variety, once he's big enough for that to be available in the next size up) and put two of them on - it'll prevent a wet swaddle and crib, which is miserable to deal with at 3am. think we started this around the time we started sleep training

the velcro swaddle things are great
