If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never. Under any circumstances, putting an irresponsible, ignorant man who takes his advice from all the wrong people in charge of the nation with the world’s most important economy would be very bad news. What makes it especially bad right now, however, is the fundamentally fragile state much of the world is still in, eight years after the great financial crisis.

Apple solely produces very expensive, luxury products. The other companies at least have some utility.

Anyway, I think it’s either a face-ripping V recovery when we realize it’s fraudvirus or a years long slog like the depression if it’s legit.

It all depends on time horizon. If you're holding stocks for which you won't need the cash for 20+ years, doing all those gymnastics is pointless.

However, if you will likely need the cash to pay bills in the near future, then yes, you should be doing as much to mitigate the damage.

with online trading, it takes literally 2 minutes to buy and sell with no fees whatsoever.

so why not sell and buy? considering how much we talk about stocks on here, I assume everyone checks it at least daily. The only consideration is getting taxed on gains in that tax year, but you can always offset with losses anyway

It's pointless AND there's no guarantee that your thesis will be correct. If you're holding stocks for retirement in 25 years, there's no point in doing all these gymnastics.

Just buy great companies and hold. If the market drops further, buy more and average down.

You don't know if your thesis will be correct. If you sell out completely, and a treatment is announced 2 days later that results in the Dow going up 5000 points, you just lost.

If it's cash you won't be needing, it's better to stay put and simply buy more if it continues to drop. The method you're talking about is for people who may need to tap their accounts and can't afford any near term losses.

If you're not retiring for 25 years, all that really matters is what the balance is in 2045.

Lol @ a treatment being announced in 2 months

I am about 50-50 right now (50 cash-50 equities). If I buy back in when the dow jumps 5k, then so bet it. I'd rather minimize my losses than maximize my gains.

Also I have crypto gains that I need to offset this year as i'm actively trading, so it's helpful if I do some tax loss harvesting.

Simply holding has always worked out for me. If you're in the right stocks, you'll have some short term paper losses, but will be perfectly fine within 6-9 months.

During the trade war in late 2018, Apple went from $225 down to $148, but then was up to $325 1 year later. Had you just held, you would've been fine.

I suspect your issue is that you don't have much confidence in whatever stocks you're holding and fear they won't be able to weather the storm.

The only stocks I have now are Walmart (doing fine) and Alibaba. I sold my Visa stock at 180.

I mainly just invest in index funds, which are tanking with the market.

If you have a legit system in place that is backtested then what you're doing is fine. However, most people try to do what you're doing with no real system in place which is why most who try to daytrade during times like this run into problems.

At this point i have some runway since i doubt visa will go up 35 bucks in a day and unlikely the dow will jump to 2300 in a day.

As long as you have some runway and check daily, it should work.

Markets are forward looking and the economy was in good shape prior to the virus. It’ll revert at the first sign of hope imo, powered by all the liquidity the fed is giving us

Depends on stimulus and how effective it is

At this point everyone knows virus is fraud, but the damage is done and showboating retards like Cuomo and Newsom would rather put is into recession than act rationally

IF we get a huge stimulus (like 2+ trillion currently rumored) it could be back by a couple quarters. If we get weak McConnell cuck stimulus, could be years.

The fraud virus is causing a fraud recession imo, which means the recovery time may be less than people are expecting.. It's disproportionately affecting service industry Stacys/Losers who don't add actual economic value. The system already has enough slack built into it to absorb a large amount of dead weight imo, as evidenced by the last few years of stock market returns vs. abysmal labour force participation.

People not spending money for a few months has obvious knock-on effects but people should perhaps bear in mind that entire countries in Europe basically shut down every fuckin' August and it doesn't affect anything because it's prithed in. What really matters imo is whether this will in some way lead to the popping of one or all of the constituent parts of the Everything Bubble. Otherwise, from an economic standpoint, this is just another event that will screw up the already ignominious lives of Losers, and perhaps cause "lawyers" with subpar phenotypes to be Lathamed.

These bubbles are seemingly constantly getting bigger and it doesn't appear to matter. Inflation would actually help proles with this sort of thing. People have become pussies about bubbles popping or anything changing in the economy e.g. tariffs.... thinking anything/everything could spread some kind of vague "contagion" that will ruin everything.

Car loans are an easy one - the bubble pops and the car gets easily repossessed and resold to another prole. They are literally on wheels, you can just tow them and resell them. The fact that car companies are shutting down production and people aren't buying new cars should keep used car values high, so they'd be reselling at a decent enough markup. The bad loan doesn't matter and if the prole is properly upside-down, they've probably been paying into gap insurance as well.... It's nothing like a foreclosure where it takes months or longer to unfold.
