Hanging out with my kids more.

Eating healthier.

Taking long walks around my neighborhood (pretty exurban and quiet) with the wife and kids.

Miss the gym, but got dumbbells and have been working out at home.

Sleeping later since no commute.

Monthly expenses have plummeted since we're eating at home, saving on gas, and not shopping for stupid shit any more.

Pleasure reading since work is quieter.

I have come to the realization that these past two weeks have probably been the most peaceful of my life. Until this period, I thought I had this problem and that problem. Bad experiences with girlfriends, strained relationships with parents, stupid arguments with random people about home repairs or my cable bill.

I am coming to realize all of this was just derivative of being exhausted from working all the time. As soon as that stopped, my other issues and worries have magically floated away.

COVID-19 has probably had a more positive impact on my life than any other event. I will abide by its lessons. I will not ever return back to "normal".

If you measure how bad this is in terms of how many times you can go to a microbrewery and spend 80 dollars to get three craft beers and a burger stuffed with some new aoili, this is bad.

If you measure how bad this is in terms of GDP, this is bad.

If you measure how bad this is in terms of attending a soulcycle class for $35.00 to hear a collection of new songs of Taylor Swift while you pedal your heart out this is bad.

But if you realize that maximizing how much time you spend worshiping at the altar of capitalism buying worthless goods, consumables and experiences when equivalent experiences exist for 1/10th the cost, this isn't bad.

If you realize why you can go to the streets of any African nation with 1/100th our economic output and see more people smiling than you'd ever see in the US, this isn't bad.

If you realize European nations offer 6-8 weeks of vacation on average and somehow their companies perform just fine this isn't bad.

7: Wake up kids, make breakfast, shower and get dressed in shorts and shirt and flip flops.

8:30: Arrive office. No one is here. Get out e-mails to clients on projects. Do 1-2 hours billable work. No one calls or e-mails.

11a: Go to park for 4-mile run and workout. 4 sets of 10 reps, cycle Burpees, squats, pushups, lunges then pullups to failure.

1215: Eat packed lunch on bench, read a book.

1: Return to empty office. Bill 2-3 hours. Schedule any calls for this time.

5: Update Confirmed Daily Cases on XO.

530: Pickup kids and play in park until dinner.

630: Dinner followed by bathtime, storytime, bed time.

8: Watch TV with wife

10: Get in bed and read classic lit until sleepy.

10:30: fall asleep.

I am getting a solid workout in every day, I am spending an extra 1-2 hours with my kids that are not rushed. We are eating healthy homecooked meals. I sleep like a baby. And my 4-6 hours of billable work will be more than enough to keep the lights on and pay salaries.

At this rate any profits will just stay in the firm, so there will be no bonus, but these may be the best working months of my life. Our monthly expenses are down. I honestly dread going back to 8 hour billable days, much less 200 hour months.

It is quite interesting to watch from my practice entire industries reveal themselves to be like ordinary Americans, living paycheck to paycheck to maximize short term profit and satisfaction and two weeks into this finding themselves on the road to destitution. Frauds just one minor calamity away from ruin. Many of these same folks who extolled the virtues of debt and cheap money from the hilltops and mocked me for my aversion to debt now find themselves on the brink of collapse.

We may return to a world with no aoili burgers, no loud music and studio cycling, no music festivals with trustafarians huddled up, and no luxury dealers selling pointless trinkets of social status.

It's 1:30p.m. on the west coast as I stare into the serene quiet landscape of my usually bustling metropolis. Time for a glass of wine. Time to watch the show as the old world burns, hopeful that a more meaningful and more real new one awaits us on the other end.

1) There is still a sense of dread floating around, worry about parents, inlaws, older family members. Worrying about whether any football will be played in the next year. Worrying about whether by the time I get to play a basketball game again, I'll be too old and out of shape to dunk anymore. No more squatting. This dread is tiring.

2) To be a good quarantine-pig you need to constantly dedicate 10-20% of your mental energy being safe and vigilant about how you go about your day whenever you are outdoors. Everything needs to be planned more. Meals need to be planned a lot more. This is tiring.

3) Even if work is now at 40-60%, there are no such things as weekends for anyone, especially clients. So on that day when you eventually have to work a real 7-8 hours like today (Sunday), with everything else going on it is impossible to remain focused and care about the work enough to get it done in the manner that GC expects. I can't imagine sitting at home thinking about nothing but closing a deal - which is how I focus when I am busy. That may be good for me as a general life goal, but it makes my job a lot harder.

EDIT:

Every other day I go for a 4 mile run and a 20 mile bike ride on varying routes - typically without coming within 10 feet of another person. That's pretty nice, but again - everything takes longer and take a little more energy when you are stressed about the apocalypse.

Also for hotel clients they are harassing the shit out of us either trying to sue the brands for something or trying to convert their shit hotels into plague wards at 70 cents on the dollar (full occupancy) which is much better than the 95% vacancy rate we are seeing in hotels.

Also it seems the boomer partners are so gung ho about this being an opportunity that they are focused on random work shit every minute - as if they will shrivel up and die if they dont have work to do. I just want to be left alone and enjoy some fucking down time with my wife and my dog and watch fucking Tiger King or Ozark.
