"Even if there are cases next door, the answer is no, you do NOT need to get or wear any face masks—surgical masks, “N95 masks,” respirator masks, or anything else—to protect yourself against the coronavirus. "

"There will most likely be shortages of personal protective equipment at medical institutions and this may in part be driven by supplies being purchased by the general public. Emergency preparedness efforts will address supply chains, but there really is no reason for the general public to purchase large numbers of N95 masks."

Adams said that as a health-care worker, he has to get “fit tested” when wearing protective masks, and those who do not wear the masks properly tend to fidget with them or touch their faces — which “actually can increase the spread of coronavirus.” The kind of mask that requires a “fit test” is called an N95 respirator. It should be worn tightly on a person’s face and is meant to protect the wearer by filtering out 95 percent of airborne particles, according to the CDC.
The only people who should be wearing masks are healthy people who are taking care of someone who is sick or sick people who are coughing or sneezing when they are in public, according to the World Health Organization.

No health agencies in the US have issued recommendations for the public to wear N95 respirators.https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-face-masks-not-entirely-effective-2020-1
The CDC also does not recommend N95 respirators—the tight-fitting masks designed to filter out 95% of particles from the air that you breathe—for use, except for health care workers. https://time.com/5794729/coronavirus-face-masks/
"We need to make sure those N95 masks are available for the doctors and nurses that are going to be taking care of individuals that have this illness," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said during a House Foreign Affairs hearing on Thursday.
o be clear once again, Americans don't need masks. The CDC says that healthy people in the US shouldn't wear them because they won't protect them from the novel coronavirus.
In fact, warns US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams, face masks might actually increase your risk of infection if they aren't worn properly.https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/29/health/coronavirus-mask-hysteria-us-trnd/index.html
Cloth masks don’t block small particles. The sort of mask that does is an N95 respirator, which filters out 95% of smaller air particles and is often specially fitted for healthcare workers. I wore one during last summer’s forest fires, and it feels like suffocating in a moist, overheated shell through which you are unable to suck in enough air when, say, walking. It’s uncomfortable AF. You will take it off.
You’re causing a healthcare worker mask shortage. The people who do need masks are the healthcare workers who are being coughed on by patients who may well have coronavirus; research shows that masks effectively protect them. Let hospitals and healthcare workers have the damn masks.https://www.fastcompany.com/90459494/are-you-wearing-a-mask-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak-here-are-5-reasons-not-to
95s are better than simple surgical masks for the general population at preventing respiratory infection. But they might not be fool-proof either. It makes a tight seal around your mouth and nose, making it harder to breathe in. And this might be dangerous to people with respiratory problems. But, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared face mask respirators including N95s for use by the general population. However, it is recommended that you discuss it with your healthcare provider before you start wearing them, mentioned Columbia News.
Also, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doesn’t recommend the use of masks for the general public without symptoms.

I called this shit out early on to my irl friends. A bunch of us in CA have N95 masks that we bought years past for the wildfires. So we were talking about pulling them out from storage to re-use but then media reports kept coming out saying these wouldn't do anything.
Some more nuanced reports said the cloth masks didn't do shit except maybe prevent transmission if you had it, and that N95 masks did help but that most people didn't wear them correctly, so they were basically useless, and oh, btw, save them for health professionals.

It was a transparent healthcare workers need them more than you do ploy and everyone saw that.
Just like all the docs (and friends, loved ones) on Hydroxychloroquine to prevent infection.
Surgical masks do help the wearer some, but really it is to prevent the spread from the sick.
If CDC were just honest about not having any N95 because they are all made in China and China bought the world’s supply, there would have been rioting. But they should have said “wear a mask” anything is better than nothing, especially in NY subways.

watch the first two minutes including Fauci's interview with 60 Minutes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tIuPBUqoZg
notice how Fauci takes the question and twists it into "are masks 'perfect' as some people claim?" he says, no they're not.
but the question was, "is there a reason to wear masks?"

different health commissioners have been recommending masks, and now Fauci (Obama, MSM, etc.) have no choice but to support what was the obvious truth all along.
it's sad because it was bum advice, and bc it was obviously so, and also bc Fauci seems like a basically good guy.
