Interstellar travel may be too big a pain in the ass for any civilization, no matter how advanced. There could be solar systems with multiple inhabited planets in which there is commerce or at least communication among them. If we look closely we might be able to find one.
Even if interstellar travel is practicable, there might be so few groups capable of it that encounters are very rare.
Alternatively, it's possible we have been visited in the past and are unaware of it. It also is possible there are current visitations. If a civilization has the capacity for interstellar travel, keeping hidden is probably an easy thing to do.
Ultimately there is also the question of why would anyone want to come here even if they could. It might just not be a particularly interesting place. We think we are Vegas, but perhaps we are seen as S. Central LA back in the day. |

You get 5,000 years to travel each light year ~3E5 meters/second. Voyager, based on 70s technology hits about 2E4 meters/second. If we use nuclear propulsion and whatever additional tricks with solar sails, etc., we're already close to that speed.
Also, it's more practical to send robots than humans. Maybe after the robots terraform each planet along the way, people can take their time and follow shortly. |
