Tax is ~50% for the bracket so take home would be ~8500 / month excluding bonus.

I guess in Norway, you're indirectly paying for living in a proper first world country.

I think package is competitive for Norway - not many people in the country clear 200K USD at least my age (mid 30s) from what I hear.

Have a norwegian gf (hence my reason for considering the role)

Thanks, super helpful!

I've visited Oslo a few times - I wouldn't say 50 euros for a pizza, but easily 20-25$ for a personal size. $10 for a beer at your typical bar.

I know this is lower compared to big cities for sure - NYC, SF, London - but I am weighing lifestyle quite heavily into the equation (personal).

Are you independently wealthy?

I think it'd be great to fuck around in Norway for awhile, but you need to remember that during that time you're not really saving for your own retirement, you're getting taxed a lot, and you may not be allowed to become a citizen and/or you may not want to stay there your whole life.

Do you want to learn how to speak Norwegian? Do you want to go through the whole rigmarole of becoming a Norwegian Citizen. If so, then go for it.

yup, you nailed my biggest concern - that it's not enough to really build up any wealth (I am not independently wealthy). I do think this opp might open me up to higher paying opportunities within 2-3 years either within this company (or others). It's a good sector (renewable energy).

I am open to the idea of becoming a Norwegian citizen (especially with the current state of things in the US) but not committed to it long term. I don't think it's that difficult (especially if I end up marrying my norwegian gf).

As I know it's a time commitment. I think you have to be there on work visa for something like 7+ years. You'd have to pass norwegian language test. It makes more sense if you want to marry your gf and have a family there.

With respect to making more money over time, you need to realize that Norway isn't like the US. $200k+ USD is a very good salary over there, and you'd be surprised how much compression there is at the top. You're not going to get rich there working in a company. And you're right, you're not going to be able to save much and invest much there either. Also, when it comes time to get a house for your family, it gets expensive real fast. Check out finn.no to see what flats and houses go for.

I'm not sure about Norway, but a lot of European countries have something in place where if you live in the country for 5+ years, you become a permanent legal resident. So Citizenship might not be on the table, but he plans to stay 5+ years in Norway, he could potentially become a permanent legal resident.

Thanks - yup, I've checked out the prices, and a decent 3-br for a family (something I'm thinking about in the next few years) in a good neighborhood gets to high six figures quickly. I've got 100K equity on real estate in US, would consider selling that to buy a house and take advantage of the low interest rates / mortgage packages the country offers.

Don't have a view on real estate long term in Norway though.

Sounds like a great opportunity. I would evaluate it based on the long term, not what will happen financially in the next 2-3 years. International experience is valuable, but it can sometimes be hard to figure out how to capitalize on it career-wise. Norway is a cr country, and while you won't be making megabucks, you'll be able to have a decent life style. Are there also Euro style perks, e.g., car? If I were a young fellow I would probably go for it. For me personally QoL in Oslo vs. NYC would be a no-brainer. The Norwegian gf is a ++.

Thanks OldHLSDude. Yup, perks are pretty comprehensive including car (8K USD per year) parking, phone, internet, gym, drycleaner, subsidized meals, free apt/cabin usage in Norway & Spain. They will also lend you money to buy shares at a discount (this is a new concept to me). No 401K matching though which was a great benefit in NYC.

I would only do it if you plan to marry your Norwegian girlfriend and then would be happy living in Norway forever. While you will not become wealthy, living in a country that will hopefully stay majority white for many years is insanely valuable. In 10 or 15 years the USA will be largely unrecognizable.
