Depends on geography. There are a lot of areas where it is still entirely plausible.

seems like the places where it might work (sparsely populated regions) are areas where you wouldn't be worried about the bat flu in the first place

The thing is, that if it is done for only those who had a reasonably high chance of contracting the virus, it could work to reduce the spread. Say someone at a church ends up with the virus and you tell everyone in the church that Sunday someone was infected and ask them to quarantine, that could help those people not spread it, by say, going to work as a nurse. There are lots of issues, like the lag in symptoms, the fact that there are real costs to people of not going to work on a mere chance of infection, but it could help.

But the idea that it can work to stamp things out is nuts. As is somehow alerting people that someone on the same train had the virus and then quarantine everyone who was on the train for two weeks.

Sort of agree, but there's tons of exceptions to the rule.

For instance, Green Bay, WI. It's less dense than other areas of Wisconsin, like Milwaukee or Madison. But it's also got meatpacking plants that blew the fuck up. Per capita, it's the most infectious area in the state and it blew up overnight. There's no fucking chance the county health department could have ever caught up with contact tracing in Green Bay.
