It's a budget steel that notoriously does not hold a great edge. It was fine on the delica and endura when they each cost like $50 and $70 respectively. Now that the delica is $85 and the endura is $100 neither is a good value IMO.

How long ago? At $60 it's a great value. Spyderco jacked up the prices in the last couple years. Standard endura now retails for like $90.

couple years ago. amazon would have them for $130-150ish but one of the colors would inevitably be $60-65 for no reason.

edit: well, fine, they're all $90-120 now.

yeah it's a great design but advances in the knife world together with the increased competition from high quality chinese companies means that $90 for plastic handles and VG10 steel on a lock back just isn't a great value. At $60 i'd be all over it.

given your parameters, it needs to be something dramatic but also something you'll want to carry every day so that it will have the sentimental "this was dad's knife" quality for your son; it shouldnt just be a gift from you but something he will see as an extension of you.

I'd happily recommend the Drop/Ferrum Forge Buc:

https://drop.com/buy/drop-ferrum-forge-buc

It has a dramatic cleaver style blade with a comfortable and classic titanium handle. It's made of premium materials and has a great fit and finish and action, as it is manufactured by WE Knives.

At $140 it is a good value too.

Yeah but with those materials the price could easily be $175 or so. I was able to get it for $100 during their black Friday sale. Not flame.

I don't think I would send you a knife man. They are my babies. Sorry dude.

Probably the kizer t1. It is the very definition of something simple done well. Doesn't hurt that I got it at a nice discount.

Some of the best production knives in the world are made in Taiwan. Gerbers however are absolute shit. You clearly arent a knife guy.

wouldn't you rather carry something american made by a true patriot like Greg Medford? Something along the lines of this bad boy:

Not for $1200. To me, a pocket knife is a tool and should last basically your whole life or at least a couple decades. I have a black Swiss army that I used to carry. Not even sure what model. Was chewed on by the dog, sanded it down, served me well. Now it rides in the truck. Then I got a Swiss champ which is too heavy to carry. That lives in the nightstand. Got the gerber maybe 20 years ago, picked up a couple here and there but gave them away as I like the gerber best as I am used to it. It’s light, it’s sharp, easy open, it works.

Bloodacre, I want to believe in your cause, but I just don't understand how you have so many occasions to cut stuff with a knife.

Sunday i played soccer. one of the gates was locked shut with a thick plastic tie thing. yuri shouts "does anyone have knife?" i sprinted to get my spyderco paramilitary 2, easily cut the plastic and liberated the gate so people no longer had to hop a fence to get in.

today, my wife is getting set to go on a walk but her dumbass rolled over some plastic mesh gardening shit that got all stuck in the wheel. "snoot baby, I need your knife" she called. Luckily i had my kizer t1 in my pocket. I ripped through that shit and saved the day and she got to go on her walk.

Having a knife means you are prepared, you are a helpful guy. Having more than like 6 knives means you are mentally ill but still i do like to be prepared and helpful.

Most multitools don't have great knives on them, but i generally agree with you that a multitool is a more useful thing to have if you can only have 1 thing.

The blade on a multitool is usually not going to be capable of clearing brush on the fly. Below is a pic i took of a path I cleared into the woods yesterday so i could take a little nature walk with my kids. Wouldn't really be able to do that with the small, low quality blade you usually find on a multitool.

it's really perfect. i refer to it as a high end beater knife. it's made from premium materials but is intended to be used and gets the job done. it's not some "case queen" that you keep locked away and own just as a collector item.
