They feel good to shoot. Single stack, metal frame. They're just not as practical as more modern guns are because carrying hammer cocked / safety on is intimidating for most people.

The DA first pull sucks, but otherwise I like my 220 combat as an alternative to 1911's.

Fact Check: Mostly true.

Also, 100+ years of R&D and manufacturing advancements (materials, process, QC/QA, automation vs hand fitting) means that there are "better" designs out there now that are cheaper to make. How much better/cheaper? Not sure. But it's probably a sub optimal design in 2020.

1911 does not have a DA first pull

That's the whole reason it's superior to non-1911 hammer fired pistols

You convinced me to get a 1911 the other day. Been looking into them since but a huge pain in the ass to find one in California. Might get the Springfield EMP with 3.1" barrel but was hoping for more of a "fun" gun than a practical tool.

What do you think it offers over a modern .45 pistol? You have the unholy trinity of heavier, lower capacity, and less reliable than an M&P or Glock.

A 1911 is 'faster' in the sense that you're SA for your first shot. Heavier handles .45 recoil better and generally improves follow-up accuracy. I'm not saying a 1911 is a better carry gun, but there is a reason they still exist and have a huge following.

Boomers for the most part. There's still blackpowder revolvers and matchlocks out there, and I own them for fun but they're toys.

I think you're dismissing the benefit of ergonomics and over valuing low weight. The two guns I've been most accurate with are my original Browning Hi-Power and a Sig 225. Of course my duty/carry weapon has always been my Glock, but it's never been a nail driver like the HP was.

1911s don't have varying grip sizes and generally poor grip texture other than the G10 panels ($$$). Modern guns with interchangeable back straps and laser stipples are far better ergonomically. Also low weight matters a lot because you'll be carrying a pistol several orders of magnitude longer than you'll be shooting it.

Handguns aren't meant for accuracy anyways, shooting minute of man at 50 yards is doable with any gun on the market now.

I really only have pistols because long gun open carry makes you look like a retard. They're only useful for fighting your way to a rifle.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote. However, there are circumstances that favor the 1911. People use them for pistol competitions because the SA first shot will always be faster than a striker fired gun and the weight handles the recoil better. That's not 1911 specific, it's more SA specific, but 1911's tend to be what people buy for SA in .45.

You may be correct on grip with respect to the ability to adjust a modern gun to fit more hand types. However, I never once had someone pick up my Hi-Power (noted, not a 1911) and not comment that it felt like sex to shoot and was laughably accurate at normal range distances.

That's fair, 1911 has such a long history as a competition platform that it excels in that area from the head start in development and lots of rules being written around that specific model. Outside of that though, it just seems like we have made a lot of progress that it doesn't make sense for a non-enthusiast the same way a Model T doesn't make sense as a commuter car anymore.

100% - a 1911 wouldn't be the first or only gun I'd suggest for someone. It's more something to try out if someone starts to enjoy shooting and wants to expand the types of guns they're familiar with and can appreciate the pros/cons of each.

cr. i like to shoot SA and carry cocked on safe sometimes. but i would rather take my CZ-75 SA/DA than a 1911 SA only if I want SA capability.

I love my CZ P-09 in SA. I have it kitted out "offensive pistol" style like a MK23 with a silencer, LEM, and night sights. 21 rounds on tap and fits in my desk drawer.

Have 3 and carry a p938 daily. There is some false info in this thread. Didn’t read it all. They are finicky and have a lot more maintenance than glocks. Best triggers I have on handguns are on them.
