I go through months were I just consume Civil War history and there's no topic I don't find interesting. I'm reading a book about Sea Island Cotton right now that really discusses deeply the cotton trade, market forces, etc. of cotton grown in coastal Georgia and SC. It's a great book.

After I graduated law school my Dad and I drove south from Philly and hit all the major battlefields between Philly and Charleston. We started at Gettysburg and ended at Ft. Sumter. We even went to some revolutionary ones like Cowpens and Kings Mountain. Took a week doing it. It was really amazing.

Recently finished a book about Wade Hampton.

https://www.biblio.com/book/wade-hampton-iii-ackerman-robert-k/d/1275973554?aid=frg&utm_source=google&utm_medium=product&utm_campaign=feed-details

It talks a lot about Southern politics in the 1880's and 1890's, and of course deals a lot with race relations of that time. It was amazing to me how similar the issues of those days are to issues of today. Even the slogans are similar, with one one of the candidates running a campaign slogan that was basically "Hope & Change."

It is also interesting how intertwined the black community was with the white community. For the most part, the leaders of the black community were former slaves, the leaders of the white community were former planters. However, the level of cooperation, interaction, and generally decent interactions surprised me. That's not to say that there was equality or that the social system was just, it was just that the world back then was described by this book as different than I would have imagined.

It's worth visiting Fredericksburg so you can see what a monumentally bad set of ideas Burnside had. The town has not grown that much and so you can still get a decent sense of how the battle looked. People talk about the hills in Gettysburg and then you get there and they are like tiny bumps that even a fatmo could run up. In Fredericksburg it is a significant hill.

Fredericksburg battlefield is nuts. Can you imagine being in the third wave of Union soldiers to charge the heights? You've just watched 2 waves before you get blown to smithereens with no results, and then it's your turn. Unspeakably bad.

I live near the site of a minor civil war battle. I've found 1 union minie ball on my land, but across the street we found about 45 union shots and about 10 Confederate mini balls. We think that there was some action here but there is no record of anything.

Sometimes I sit at my salt estuary and try to imagine what it must have looked like when the union ironclads came steaming up the river in 1861.

tl; dr versions.

Would you like to hear my song?

I'm afraid it's rather long

Of the famous "On to Richmond" double trouble

Of the half-a-dozen trips and half-a-dozen slips

And the very latest bursting of the bubble

'Tis pretty hard to sing and like a round, round ring

'Tis a dreadful knotty puzzle to unravel

Though all the papers swore, when we touched Virginia's shore

That Richmond was a hard road to travel

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

Richmond is a hard road to travel

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

Richmond is a hard road to travel, I believe

First, McDowell, bold and gay, set forth the shortest way

By Manassas in the pleasant summer weather

But unfortunately ran on a Stonewall, foolish man

And had a "rocky journey" altogether

And he found it rather hard to ride o'er Beauregard

Johnston proved a deuce of a bother

And 'twas clear beyond a doubt that he didn't like the route

And a second time would have to try another

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

For Manassas is a hard road to travel

Manassas gave us fits, and Bull Run made us grieve

For Richmond is a hard road to travel, I believe

Then the great Galena came, with her portholes all aflame

And the Monitor, that famous naval wonder

But the guns at Drewry's Bluff gave them speedily enough

The loudest sort of reg'lar Rebel thunder

The Galena was astonished and the Monitor admonished

Our patent shot and shell were mocked at

While the dreadful Naugatuck, by the hardest kind of luck

Was knocked into an ugly cocked hat

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

For James River is a hard road to travel

The gun-boats gave it up in terror and despair

For Richmond is a hard road to travel, I declare

Then said Lincoln unto Pope,

"You can make the trip, I hope

I will save the Universal Yankee nation

To make sure of no defeat, I'll leave no lines of retreat

And issue a famous proclamation"

But that same dreaded Jackson, this fellow laid his whacks

And made him, by compulsion, a seceder

And Pope took rapid flight from Manassas' second fight

'Twas his very last appearance as a leader

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

For Stonewall is a hard road to travel

Pope did his very best, but was evidently sold

For Richmond is a hard road to travel, I am told

We are very much perplexed to know who is the next

To command the new Richmond expedition

For the Capital must blaze, and that in ninety days

And Jeff and his men be sent to perdition

We'll take the cursed town, and then we'll burn it down

Plunder and hang up each cursed Rebel

Yet the contraband was right when he told us they would fight

"Oh, yes, massa, they fight like the devil!"

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

For Richmond is a hard road to travel

Then pull off your coat and roll up your sleeve

For Richmond is a hard road to travel, I believe

Author: stubborn abode legal warrant

Lol commenters HATE how much he genuinely loves and respects Davis and Forrest. And historians HATE how much he loves anecdotes instead of having retarded nonsense stats and stuff. Shows how 180 he is that he's a novelist and just did his own research and wrote better books about the war (x3) than any boring ass historian ever could.

Hi to myself

I think part of the appeal for me (besides both sides being americans - is a more natural imagining of the landmarks and descriptions of the war in books etc compared to when you hear about some place in Greece, troops crossing the Rhine, Dardanelles, danube river basin, etc. - I can imagine a farmhouse in PA / VA, what a river crossing in TN , KY or VA looks like, i can picture sherman's army marching through SC, and so on)

Here's a taste of my civil war library:

Come, stack arms, men! Pile on the rails,

Stir up the camp-fire bright;

No matter if the canteen fails,

We'll make a rousing night!

Here Shenandoah brawls along,

And burly Blue-Ridge echoes strong,

To swell our brigade's rousing song

Of "Stonewall Jackson's way."

We see him now, - the old slouched hat,

Cocked o'er his eye askew;

The shrewd, dry smile, - the speech so pat,

So calm, so blunt, so true.

The "Blue-Light Elder," his foe knows well.

Says he, "that's Banks, - he don't like shell;

Lord save his soul! we'll give him hell!"

In Stonewall Jackson's way.

Silence! ground arms! kneel all! caps off!

Old "Blue Lights" going to pray.

Strangle the fool that dares to scoff!

Attention! it's his way.

Appealing from his native sod,

In forma pauperis to God,

Say "tare Thine arm; stretch forth thy rod,

Amen!" "That's Stonewall Jackson's way."

He's in the saddle now, Fall in!

Steady the whole brigade;

Hill's at the ford, cut off, we'll win

His way out, ball and blade!

What matter if our shoes are worn?

What matter if our feet are torn?

Quick-step! we're with him before morn!

That's "Stonewall Jackson's way."

The sun's bright lances, rout the mists,

Of morning, and by George!

Here's Longstreet, struggling in the lists,

Hemmed in an ugly gorge.

Pope and his Yankees, fierce before,

"Bay'nets and grape!" hear Stonewall roar;

"Charge, Stuart! Pay off Ashby's score!"

In "Stonewall Jackson's way."

Ah! Maiden, wait and watch and yearn

For news of Jackson's band!

Ah! Widow, read, with eyes that burn,

That ring upon thy hand;

Ah! Wife, sew on, pray on, hope on;

Thy life shall not be all forlorn

The foe had better ne'er been born

That gets in "Stonewall's way."

Yeah laymen seemed like articulate, almost beautiful sounding writers. English hadn't yet become standardized like it boringly is today.
