Was hoping to get a sense of which beers in the area are worth checking out and maybe see stuff about events, specials and brewery openings.

What I’ve instead seen is an odd sort of geeky dick measuring contest. These guys post pictures of huge shipments of out of state beer that costs hundreds of dollars to get shipped. They take a daily roll call and these dudes are drinking 11% stouts at 11am on a Wednesday (because it’s with lunch it’s ok).

This is a whole new lifestyle out there I wasn’t aware of.

I'd say it was barely a theme in the movie and really just there to support and illustrate Miles' overall depression.

Also, it's a pretty good flick: beautifully shot, great comedic chemistry between the leads and some really touching moments.

Havnt been there since I moved from NY a few years ago but I remember their beers being really good even if mostly that hazy ipa style that is everywhere now.

Thing is, there’s 100 other breweries making the same beer and it’s not like Other Half is soooo much better that it makes sense to go theory elaborate trading/expense to get the beer shipped from out of state.

same way with whiskey/bourbon aficionados.

I once went as a guest to this private bourbon club, with over a million dollars worth of bourbon bottles in the clubhouse. The guys who were members had to escort us everywhere, but you could literally take any bottle in the place and take a small pour, that was the rule. Tried the best whiskey/bourbon that I've ever had, a bunch were close to $1000 a bottle (but to be fair my favorite was a JL Weller red label I think, less than $100 a bottle but impossible to find)

But listening to these guys talk was exhausting. They literally knew specific barrels of specific years of a bourbon, and talked about various "picks" as if it was common knowledge. They had insane knowledge and scholarship about bourbons. Some of these are clearly better than others, but at the end of the day its all the same shit.

fwiw the vast majority of ryes on the market are barely legal, meaning they adjust the mashbill until it's 51% rye. you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 51% rye and a high rye mashbill bourbon.

bulleit rye is made by mgp, a very large contract producer of whiskey. there is not bulleit distillery. really, any 95% rye you come across is made by them. in fact, 99.99% of "craft" whiskey you find is made by mgp. there is a huge "scam" with craft whiskey in that most of it is bought from somewhere else and just has a label slapped onto it. fwiw it's great stuff imo, but it's just interesting.

bottled in bond whiskeys are great. evan williams bib is amazing for the price. a lot of the "value" bottles have been exposed and are harder to come by, but you can usually find ewbib anywhere. henry mckenna is one of the last absolute steal of a whiskey you can still sometimes find around, but it's starting to get harder to find. eagle rare is in the same boat if you can get it for around $35.

another interesting bourbon phenomenon is how some "bargain" brands got really popular and are now trading for multiple times their retail price. the most prominent examples of this are elmer t lee and weller (the entire line up). elmer t lee was celebrated as "bargain blantons" as it's single barrel, 90 proof (as opposed to 93), and rumored to be the same age as blantons. yet etl retailed for about $30 and blantons was about $55 to $60. etl became so popular that it now sells online for $100+, while you can still usually find blantons for retail. it's sort of nuts.

similarly, weller, especially ordinary "special reserve" weller, was seen as a great bargain wheated whiskey. however, when pappy mania hit word got out that weller was the same whiskey and mashbill as pappy (this is true, select barrels of the weller mashbill are blessed to be aged longer and eventually become pappy). this spurred a huge interest in weller as "poor man's pappy" (specifically, a recipe of 12 year weller mixed with old weller antique). now these bottles also have become unobtainable and trade for many times their retail price. in 2014 you used to be able to find cases of them for sale stacked to the ceiling.

despite contrarian opinion amongst whiskey nerds, i think pappy is great and that there is nothing like it on the market (ultra aged wheated bourbon). i have the entire line up open on my shelf. however, i do a lot of whiskey hunting the fall and sell almost all the pappy i find.

it's the same as any ultra-luxury good. is a $5,000.00 amp really "worth it" over a relatively high end $500 amp? $10,000.00 speakers versus $1,000.00? $1,000.00 wine versus $100? bentley versus bmw?

in every one of these examples, i think the answer is generally "yes". but temper your expectations. a $1,000.00 bottle of wine isn't going to be 10x better than a $100 bottle, and a $100,000.00 home theater isn't going to sound 10x better than a $10,000.00 one. pappy is great, and it's unique, but it's still just whiskey.

Yeah, there's a lot of similarities between the audiophile market and the high-end whiskey market. Opinions disseminated from a small contingent of highly discerning experts; rapidly diminishing returns as you go up the price chain; pricing attached as much or more to the prestige of the brand than the quality of the product

i think the same thing is true in every enthusiast community. i've heard similar things about cyclists, skiers, etc.

oh man, my "cyclist" friends are fucking obnoxious when they start talking about bikes. They spend $10k on bikes that they upgrade every few years.

i'm getting into mountainbiking and trying very hard not to get sucked in to it as far as obsessing about upgrading, getting the best gear, etc. i'm very susceptible to it.

At this point, nobody is doing anything that is all that new or different or, in any way, significantly better than some other competent brewery. 10-15 years ago, guys like Alchemist or Russian River or Lost Abbey or Hill Farmstead etc... were brewing at a level that pretty much no one else was. Now you can probably get stuff practically as good at the best brewery in your state or general area.

nah, HF is generally only available on draft locally (mostly northern vermont) and in a couple of cities that they send beer to sometimes (NYC and philadelphia).

for packaged stuff you still have to visit the brewery, which is like an hour from civilization (by civilization i mean stowe, a town of 4000 people).

Yeah, they’re still one of a very few top breweries that still warrant a distinction. I guess my point is that the gap is much narrower now, though, between the best brewery in a given area and the very best breweries in the world. Enough so that I don’t really give a shit about out-of-state shipments or limited release shit. There’s more than enough great beer within 30 minutes of where I live so the idea of questing for rare stuff seems silly to me now.

though i still think tree house is the overall #2 (and probably best when it comes to hoppy stuff), i haven't been there in over a year and that doesn't bother me at all.

Nothing that’s too new and great over the last 5 years but good barrel aged strong beers are more easily available now. If I’m staying home on a weekend night I like to have 2-3 strong beers and that’s gives me a nice buzz but I’m still great to wake up in the morning and do whatever.

Good beers in pretty much whatever style you want are easier to find now. There’s always some craft beer bottle store nearby with some beers on tap that you can find whatever you want. Doesn’t make sense to me why these dudes are spending hundreds of dollars to get “whales” shipped to them.

Big roll this morning. “Post what your drinking for breakfast”

At least half a dozen dudes drinking stouts with 10% ABV. One dude posted a glass of milk and got a bunch of angry emoji responses.
