Family connections enabled him to get into close proximity with movers and shakers needed to seed Microsoft in the early days for sure.

Didn't he just but a monopoly and make money off that? What genius was required there? DOS was always DOGSHIT and it was only the NT platform + backward compatibility that saved MS in the 90s.

Gates needed elite connections to actually get MS off the ground. A million dorks can create an OS, but it takes connections to make it actually happen. Gates’ dad was a Seattle biglaw founding partner. Gates also met smart people at Harvard.

zuckerberg pisses me off more. a million people were doing what he did. i had a hs friend building rudimentary social network shit at the exact same time. it was simply because it started out at Hahvahd and then spread to other elite colleges that it built up exclusivity and status, then converted that social capital into ad $$$. social media is fraud and lie$

What annoys me is how obscenely wealthy Zuck is. Gates I can understand, but Facebook seems like an utterly worthless product. It’s just a giant internet advertising platform basically.

They aren't spinning into shit. It's *extremely rare* for a company with a core competency in "x" to be able to successfully pivot to a new competency in "y," especially once the company is at scale. And throwing money at the effort usually does nothing. IBM is a notorious example of this even to this day with their struggles for relevance.

this is absurd. certainly you arent referring to technical talent. he was a completely incompetent OS designer and they had to hire someone else to finish Q-DOS. but im sure you know that already, or you would not be opining here.

Bezos - only skill: being able to stay out of jail for tax dodging

Zuck - shitty PHP Website builder

Brin - worthless schemer who glommed onto Page

Page - somewhat intelligent

Ellison - lol. Pure fraud.

Gates - at least has personally made something innovative in his life. His first product (I think is was a BASIC interpreter) was truly useful and innovative for its time. But I’m sure you knew that or else you wouldn’t be opining here.

Gates came from Biglaw Founder Dad and Banker Family Mother, supposedly born with million dollar trust fund already. Went to prep school that had powerful computer that he could use without paying for it and for hours while even college students had to dole up big $$$ for short amount of time.

Mother was on some charity board with high up IBM guy and said her son knows the computers and make IBM an OS. Dad Gates gets his associates to write ironclad contracts with IBM. Can't write an OS so buys DOS off some guy for 15k. IBM lets him keep DOS license and the rest is history.

Gates is a privileged genius or near-genius (obviously an adolescent prodigy) software engineer who got lucky sure but also was incredibly ruthless and savvy and driven as a businessman and willed his way to own the PC revolution with subpar products.
