Water heater decided to retire today. Plumber is coming tomorrow, should I get a tankless water heater? Assume budget isn't an issue.

Yes. Better for the environment, and you won't run out of hot water.

If your pipes are getting old, might want to look into PEX pipes as well as replacement. You can run dedicated pipes to each outlet straight from a "splitter" manifold by the water heater. It cuts down on sounds of water going through pipes (that THUNK you sometimes hear is water hitting the metal piping when it starts/stops flowing). It'll also mean no one will ever cut your hot/cold water in the shower by turning on a sink or flushing a toilet or whatever.

Since they're flexible, you can run them through the attic and need very minimal work compared to replacing with new copper piping. (At some point pipes have to be replaced, too, just like wiring)

You could even look at an exterior tankless and whatever spot you currently have your tank could be freed up for a closet or something, if you have your tank in a closet currently. Of course there'd be more pipe work involved if you do that.

No IMO. A contractor relative of mine said they’re really not that reliable and he’s been very unimpressed with them. tanks are the way to go unless you have a more specific reason. just replaced my water heater a few months ago when i looked at this pretty hard

I got the same advice a few years ago from a contractor who was redoing my bathroom. He would have made money selling a tankless to me but advised against it.

there are probably certain applications where tankless water heaters make sense, e.g. u have a vacation home somewhere that u only use for a month or two out of the year

but unless u need the extra space i prefer tank-based water heaters (preferably indirect water heaters)

tank-based water heaters provide uniform hot water flow, and are simple and therefore easy to service / maintain. tankless water heaters are more complex and likely require quite of bit of maintenance.

60 gallon. Tbh I don't know that I needed something like this other than relative value to house (2.1m) it seemed ok. Fool and his money notwithstanding.

How many gallon capacity? Seems ridiculous, I was able to DIY a 40 gallon gas unit for $500 last weekend with 12 year warranty and that's before 11% rebate from Menard's and $50 from the gas co in energy star rebates.
