I won’t be running a payroll. Can’t I just track expenses and create client ledgers in Excel?

i'm just kidding, you need to be running clio premium with a time-slips add-on, but only if you have westlaw next and lexis people advanced. then maybe you don't need to upload your quickbooks desktop version to your cpa office's 8 times per quarter.

Lawyers worked many hundreds of years without this bullshit. Just learn accounting yourself. Any “man” that needs to use an app to do accounting isn’t much of a man at all.

Try $200 for the desktop version and you have to “upgrade” every three years. The cheapest online option is $25/mo in perpetuity. Contingency solo bookkeeping appears to be pretty straightforward if you’re not paying any employees etc. The only feature I’ve identified with Quickbooks that I think could be useful is the check printing, which could be utilized with settlement distribution. Other than this I’m not sure what I couldn’t just do with Excel.

I'm using QB 2017 and I've never upgraded. it's just a program to track money in - money out; there's no need to pay to upgrade

I guess if you want to spend all day creating excel spreadsheets you can do it. I was happy to just pay (and I think I paid less than $200). And I'm cheap as fuck.

no Iolta I track separately in an excel file. but my trust accounts usually aren't that complicated.

I got the desktop version for $200. It helped me tremendously with accounting - 3 of my clients have multiple separate LLCs that I have to bill projects to, and it was getting a little hard for me to track the payments to each one, as some were partial payments. But this is not contingency. But I guess it would help you keep track of your time and amounts spent on each of your contingency cases.

And to my understanding you don't have to update every time there is a new version. I think I know someone who has used the same version since 2012.

Yeah my fear is none of those features apply to me. Just doing contingency car crash shitlaw. No billables. Might play it by ear for now.
