As of 3 years ago, they paid market, except everything above 160 was RSU that vested every 6 months.

Initially it takes 3 years to vest so you get more straight cash comp as special comp above the 160 ceiling and then they ween you off cash to RSUs over that 3 years. So year 1 is like marker minus 20k with 20k RSU, year 2 is market minus 60k with 60k RSU. Year 3 is 160 + RSUs to bring you to market.

still pretty similar, but the vesting is slower in the first 2 years so the cash bonus is higher in those years.

Did you take the offer 3 years ago?

Not exactly blissful. It is high hours and high stress for in-house. A lot of "prestigious" in-house at places like Amazon have groups run by former biglaw partners that bring the biglaw attitude to in-house.

tcr. Often you're a former senior biglaw associate that goes to work for a former biglaw partner and not surprisingly, it looks a bit like biglaw. Sure, you don't bill hours and don't have some of the biglaw pressures, but the underlying culture is fairly similar.

It’s gray and rainy a lot Nov-March. It never gets very cold and everything stays green all winter. Late spring, summer, and fall make for some of the most livable and consistent weather in the US. The awesome livability of the area has always been a huge draw to the region and nobody who is actually familiar with it whines about the winter months.

WTF I know shitloads of people at Amazon and they all bitch about the winter weather constantly. TBF they also take vacations in the middle of the winter and go to Hawaii and the like, so it's even more obnoxious. But still I know multiple people who grew up in Seattle and talk about all their strategies to fight SAD.

170k for a VP in-house is low. Those RSUs better sum to $80k a year....

Anyway, Covid didnt do shit to slow in-house legal recruiting. Boomers are finally retiring to that dacha in the sky in decent numbers so there are in-house gigs finally opening up.

This is some MFE talk. Amazon's RSU's depend on your position. They have people that get that same $170k cap + millions in RSUs.

the RSU component can be astounding at companies like amazon if you got in on the ground floor.

my annual compensation at a similar company is $250k/year + $1.5 million worth of RSU. i work remotely from Texas. at this pace i’ll be retired by 45. hours are 12- 7 (adjusted for pacific time) and i have to work maybe two weekend days per year.

this is not replicable in biglaw.
