McCain badly wanted to pick Lieberman but knew that would result in the base not turning out.
What's crazy about the 08 election is that McCain and Obama were virtually tied when Lehman went bankrupt on September 15th, 2008. McCain plummeted in the aftermath and never recovered. If it weren't for the financial crisis, Obama probably would have won around 300 electoral votes.

amazing how dominant his general election appeal was in 2000 had he made it through the primaries. back then he was viewed as an apolitical maverick:
