this is like asking how it’s possible for two average height parents to sometimes have a 6'7" NBA player son, or how an NBA/WNBA father/mother can sometimes have a 5'9" child. it might not be a high probability outcome in any individual case, given the parents, but it falls on a continuum of non-zero probability outcomes that will ultimately be observed *some* times across millions and millions of births.

Second, when it does occur, a non-insignificant amount of the time one of more of the grandparents are smart.
Third, IQ is clearly a mix of many genes all interacting with each other in ways we don't understand (hence why the Chinese have not been able to sequence a collection of smart genes).
The crude way I think about it is how two ugly parents can have a good looking kid if their features mix and match in the same way. There is likely cross-over in this idea with IQ (albeit less so). |
