Started with $120k and aggressively paid it down to $50k and then recast the remaining balance. The payment is now like $300/month on the long repayment plan so I just let it autopay that amount and don't really think about it since $300 doesn't make a meaningful difference to my monthly budget. I think there's around $42k or $43k by now. It's the lowest interest rate loan that's left, too.

I borrowed 124k, now down to 39k after 17 years, payment is $300. The old payment used to be 900, which was difficult for attorney incomes in my part of the country. I also benefited from 3% fixed interest rates, which younger folks don't have.

Graduated law school with about $215k student loan debt. Mostly law school but some undergrad loans too. Mixture of federal ($145k) and private ($70k). On top of that I had about ~$20k of credit card debt.

13 years later I have paid off the credit card debt. I have paid about half of the private student loans. The federal is on IBR subject to PSLF and I am about 3 years away from PSLF eligibility.

$0. GI Bill and chose my schools based on financial aid, then paid down the remaining balance as quickly as I could. Now I look like a double chump: paying my bills and going to my safety school.

$0. Graduated with about $150k in undergrad and law school debt, mostly at 6.8%. Paid it off in about 2 years during ITE by living on the cheal.

Also figured a guaranteed 6.8% return beats a speculative 10% return in the market. In retrospect, would probably have done much better with an s&p500 index fund, but don't regret the decision to be basically debt free.

Smart, man. My calculus was roughly the same. I went to grad school recently and had a lot of friends max out their loans just to put them in the S&P. They were doing pretty well, but then I think a lot of them screwed by having to withdraw during the recent trough to pay down their loans. Dollar cost averaging into a market can be pretty good, but dollar cost averaging out is a rough game to play.

I was lucky enough to graduate with no debt from undergrad or law school. Mom and Dad footed the bill. But I was a commuter student the whole time. I didn’t move out of my parents’ house until after I got my JD.
