Start in Zion, head up to Bryce, then over to Capitol Reef. From there I would head up to Moab to hit Arches and Canyonlands. Don't forget some of the state parks too like kodachrome and dead horse point. It'll be hot and crowded af until September though. There is nothing to do in SLC unless you ski. (Well, there are some cool/mountain hiking places I guess, but nothing that you couldn't already do in CA.) As an added bonus, they are also closer to LA. And you don't have to hit all of the national parks in one trip. You could easily spend a week or more just at Zion without getting bored. You can hit Hearst Castle and Monterrey Bay Aquarium along with a couple of the state parks along the way. The Boardwalk in Santa Cruz is fun if you are in to that sort of thing.
