Dramatic reduction of Rt has occurred through policy measures (social distancing and mask wearing) and that means there will be a lower threshold for herd immunity. The Rt shifts with behavior. The threshold would go higher without these measures or if people simply refuse to abide by them. Hence, a few weeks ago when the CDC head said we could easily get this under control within 1-2 months if everyone wore a mask. There’s no doubt social distancing functions to reduce the herd immunity threshold. But this virus is infectious as fuck.

Maybe, maybe not. I think you're taking a very authoritative position on an issue not nearly as clear as you want it to be. And that's not what your tweets argued. You posted your OP without detailing what those tweets actually said. You wanted everyone to think "herd immunity is so much LOWER; Fauci is a liar!" But that's certainly not the complete picture. Ironically, you're doing the same thing that you blame CNN for.
Fauci is speaking to a public that equates "herd immunity" strategy with doing nothing at all. That's what it has come to mean. Given what the tweets say, his position on such a strategy is fair and not contradictory. |
