antidepressants suck, generally. irreversible MAOIs are an exception, but they are hard to get prescribed and have some downsides.
meditation can help dramatically. psychedelics are useful as well. i have tripped my way out of MDD episodes.

I am not sure exactly. they tend to better deal with the motivational deficits that are a key part of depression, probably through dopamine mechanisms. I took parnate for a brief period and it was like this

Eat healthy, exercise and sleep regularly is a MUST, 100% non-negotiable part of the plan
Community - you need a community of peers / friends, period. Join a church group, AA, whatever you have to do. You're not plugged in to life without a community

Spiritual program - depression is a spiritual sickness, it's inwardly focused and self-centered, you have to find purpose / meaning as best you can outside of yourself. This means charity, becoming pen pals w/ some cool old war vet stuck in a nursing home from covid, whatever. Have to find some sort of fulfillment outside hedonistic pleasure
Don't underrate laughter - rewatch your favorite funny tv show or whatever that will make you crack up, you're not alive without laughter, you're a zombie
Lift more

edit: Outdoors is crucial, forgot that, go explore shit and exercise in places you've never been before, "newness" is a crucial theme here not just w/ outdoors exploration but also your social life, you can't get stuck doing same shit
