America won the war with the help of Britain (completely decimated) and the Soviet Union (communist shit hole).

Post war, the world's other top players (UK, France, Japan, Germany) were devastated basically to the point of near-ruin or ruin. America was the only country that wasn't destroyed, had a big industrial base and was a mature democracy. The other countries took decades to rebuild and America financed it. The 1950s boom is something that had never, ever happened before in history to a nation or group of people and likely will never happen again.

But our "supremacy" is just a made up lie, a fable Americans tells themselves (and we are notorious fabulists). By the 60s/70s, when Japan and Germany had rebuilt, their social structure, work ethic and productivity was wrecking America's butthold (look at car industry). Our myth was obviously cracking and the country was losing its shit. Reagan "promised" to restore it by desperately deregulating the shit out of everything and promoting capital accumulation (lol). In the 90s, things seemed to get better for a second because Americans benefited at first from cheap as fuck consumer goods being made by slave labor in Asia and women in the workforce supporting families to keep "middle class" lifestyles, but eventually the blowback from globalism would smack us in the face.

The rest of the world does most things much better than the US. Our biggest "rival" for decades was a communist shit hole with nuclear weapons, and still is, along with a rising China, that is another commie shit hole that STILL delivers more for its middle and lower classes than America does. Most Americans are literally living paycheck to paycheck an inch from disaster.

The lies this country tells itself have been as devastating as the actions taken that have destroyed it because it blinds us from the truth. The post-war boom was a total aberration that Americans still cling to and long for but will never, ever happen again and only happened because the rest of the world was in smoldering ruin.

it seems like dem presidents coincide with a rising economy and world respect and then it tumbles with an electoral college win/popular vote loss every 4-8 years. no conclusion to draw from this.

The 90s saw the playing out of Reaganesque de-regulation and the economy was Gakked Up on $teroidal policies, along with a flood of cheap consumer shit from China that convinced the American middle class it was doing well and could afford things. This worked for about 5 minutes and precipitously ended after Clinton left. But his presidency mainly benefited from groundwork laid previously and he also managed to lay the groundwork that would be the death knell for what remained of the American "economy" and working class with NAFTA and gave the banks the power that led directly to the 2008 crash. GWB was an idiot in over his head and I think had a revenge thing for Saddam bc Saddam tried to have his dad killed, they're both clearly dumb/horrible.

Tsongas was criticized on occasion by opponents as a Reaganomics-style politician, and as being closer to Republicans with regard to such issues. The Boston Herald editorialized that his political philosophy had "far more in common" with 1990s-era Republican Mitt Romney (who crossed over to vote for Tsongas in the 1992 primaries) than with traditional Massachusetts Democrats like Ted Kennedy.[11] In the mid-1980s, he shocked many of the members of the Americans for Democratic Action by telling them that they should focus more on economic growth than wealth redistribution.

The problem hasn't been other countries "wrecking" the US. Relative to our peers (mature 1st world countries), GDP growth and unemployment has been pretty good. We're richer than ever before. The problem is the distribution of income and wealth. It was far better post-WW2, but not for the reasons discussed in your oft-cited armchair historical theory. We choose policies that leave us looking like a latin-american hacienda.

So yes, the vast gulf of inequality is a major contributing factor. And being richer than ever? So is everyone else, but half the country can't come up with $500 for an emergency expense. The top 10% of Americans probably live better than anyone else, anywhere in the world. The average American does not live as well as the avg European or Japanese person. Life expectancy is actually declining. That's not happening anywhere else.

I agree with everything in this post. But your OP paints a different picture. It's the old "these other countries started eating American's lunch after WW2!" argument about why people feel worse off than they did decades ago. We've done well as a country, it's just that the national income is distributed differently than it was in 1955. That's the problem. Not the rise of Japan or western europe after WW2 or the more recent rise of China. People like to blame outsiders or people who look different than them.

But it's not just because they have restrictions on capital, they out-compete us in a variety of ways and it's measurable on many different metrics. American "supremacy" was more like American Serendipity, where we look much more average or below-average as nations got back on their feet.

This is bullshit and gets repeated constantly. Everyone has heard the "every other country was destroyed after WW2" schtick. What does it matter. Tell me what France/England/Netherlands/Italy are doing with their wonderful rebuilt infrastructure. Are we using British Steel now? Are we driving Citroens? I am pretty sure Europe was permafucked by both world wars.

German goods are expensive and their Cars break constantly, TSLA + millenials being unable to afford cars could well ruin their car industry.

Our export economy did get screwed up in the 70s but that was at the precise moment that we opened up trade with Asia. It was also because of Boomers, who literally cannot produce anything of value.
