It's the replacement for mining in ETH 2.0 You need to "stake" at least 32 ETH and you earn the right to run a transaction validator 24/7.
Rate of return will be between 5% and 20% in ETH depending how many other people do it.
Once you lock in, you're locked in until ETH 2.0 fully launches.
If you're reasonably technically inclined and you're HODLing ETH anyway, I don't see why not do this.

Bear in mind that* ETH slashing is a lot more hardcore than Tezos slashing. You can actually lose your stake if you don't bring your A-Game to node perfection.
