Most folks take a winter trip to at least southern europe to break up the cold. IF you do that it's not so bad.
Food is expensive but other parts of your life will be much cheaper - it almost evens out. Tourists dont offset their spending with savings on healthcare etc., so the extremely expensive dining out costs seem more crazy than they really are. |

I would go, but with an openness to the idea that you might like Europe enough to stay, build a family if it works out. Vet Norway for that when you first get there. If it’s not for you, travel in Europe and vet other countries. If you think they all suck, come back but with a better appreciation of what you like here. And if you meet someone, bring them back. |

If you’re open to making Europe home and it turns out you don’t like it that’s fine — was worth a shot and you’ll learn some things. If you’re open and it turns out you love it then great.
It could be a really credited life if you meet someone, you live in Norway, and you vacation in the Med once or twice a year. |

From a relative income standpoint you’re better off in Oslo, where the 99th percentile income kicks in around $225k vs. $500k in the US. Norway doesn't have the absurd laundry practices that Sweden and Finland do, described in the thread above, but a lot of the other gripes are the same. The weather, the people, and the state alcohol monopoly are all the same. What's more, everything is way more expensive in Norway -- you have about 50% more purchasing power in the US.
I don't know what you like to do for fun, but Oslo is pretty secluded. If it involves money, you will be able to do less of it, and if it involves other people, you're going to have to find other people who are both willing to be your friends and also interested in the same things. If it involves alcohol, you will be paying more than twice as much for it.
I say no go. |
