doing anything there seems like a headache
you can't drive easily or park your car
it's violent and full of shady weirdos
it smells like piss, is dirty
everything is closed because of covid
it's the most expensive place to live in the US, so any increased income you make is eaten up by housing costs and other blue city taxes
why bother?

Let's take it point by point:
1) doing anything there seems like a headache
you can't drive easily or park your car
A: The convenience of NYC is unsurpassed by any other city. Everything you need is accessible and mostly 24 hours. You don't need a car. You get a zip car to go out of town if you want.
2) it's violent and full of shady weirdos
It's not really "violent", it has bad areas but overall remains very safe. Shady weirdos are everywhere else, too.
3) it smells like piss, is dirty
The smell thing is only in summer and to be fair, people didn't move here because it was clean. Clean is not enough.
4) everything is closed because of covid
And once it re-opens, people will storm back.
5) it's the most expensive place to live in the US, so any increased income you make is eaten up by housing costs and other blue city taxes
Your salary will likely be a lot higher here, but it is expensive, yes. It's a city for the rich and extremely poor, not so much the middle class, at least MFH.
why bother?
When it's good, there's nothing better.

NYC is (or at least was, pre-COVID) one of the handful of places smart young people moved after college because of jobs.
You might want to be there because that's where the good jobs are.
But you also want to be there because as a smart 20-something professional, you want to be around other smart 20-something professionals. Those are your friends and your dating pool. You're not going to find that in the suburbs. You're not going to find that in Oklahoma City.

Unless you're an elite fashion designer, opera singer, 1st chair symphony performer, or are in a Broadway show, you have no business in NY.
I'm not sure when it happened precisely, but it was when bank branches and Duane Reades started proliferating out of control on every block that the last bit of charm that made the city livable was gone
I guess it was also the first massive generation of trust fund kids coming of age that pushed the COL over the top there, too

Sex. It's because of sex. I don't know why you're not saying this. It all comes down to sex. Men have access to a lot of pussy in NYC. There are a lot of women. There are a lot of bars. There are jobs in NYC that put you at the top of the social hierarchy, as bullshit as it is, and that attracts women.
Women are there because there are successful men, or at least they believe they're around. An entire show, SATC, is more or less based around this idea.
Then eventually you leave or get a wife and leave, because at that point the sex isn't as important.
