what is the point in living/working in NYC?

A: The convenience of NYC is unsurpassed by any other city. Everything you need is accessible and mostly 24 hours. You don't need a car. You get a zip car to go out of town if you want.
2) it's violent and full of shady weirdos
It's not really "violent", it has bad areas but overall remains very safe. Shady weirdos are everywhere else, too.
3) it smells like piss, is dirty
The smell thing is only in summer and to be fair, people didn't move here because it was clean. Clean is not enough.
4) everything is closed because of covid
And once it re-opens, people will storm back.
5) it's the most expensive place to live in the US, so any increased income you make is eaten up by housing costs and other blue city taxes
Your salary will likely be a lot higher here, but it is expensive, yes. It's a city for the rich and extremely poor, not so much the middle class, at least MFH.
why bother?
When it's good, there's nothing better. |

Enjoy lugging them home in the cold, rain, snow, extreme heat. Oversized items from a store? Enjoy struggling with a taxi/uber. Taking the kids somewhere? Enjoy rolling them on the sidewalk feet away from cars screaming by at 60 mph while homeless spit in your kids face. |
