Desert Shield became Desert Storm, and everyone was scared it would become another Vietnam. The country rallied around Bush and his approval ratings shot up to 90 percent, which was unprecedented. Yellow ribbons all over the place.

That first night, people thought all the Russian air defense weaponry that Iraq had bought (and they bought a ton) might actually work. No allied planes got shot down that first night tho.
