I remember watching the attacks on CNN and talking to people at school about it. Desert Shield became Desert Storm, and everyone was scared it would become another Vietnam. The country rallied around Bush and his approval ratings shot up to 90 percent, which was unprecedented. Yellow ribbons all over the place.

Thirty years.

Fellow old here. I stayed up all night watching the coverage- was the most exciting tv viewing of my life. That first night, people thought all the Russian air defense weaponry that Iraq had bought (and they bought a ton) might actually work. No allied planes got shot down that first night tho.

Remember when Saddam launched the SCUD missiles at Israel? That was intense.

Yeah, for me the pinnacle was when I was watching some tv reporter give a live report from Iraq (they allowed journalists there) and in the background was some building, and a tomahawk cruise missile came in and hit the building during the report.

I was like:

I was young but I remember my parents watching it on CNN and Bernard Shaw (didn’t know who he was then but remember his deep voice) reporting from Baghdad

And in less than a year and a half Bush’s approval rating dropped into the 20s

All because of a "recession" that was laughably minor by today's standards.

After the first 24 hours, people knew this was be pretty different from Vietnam

It became apparent very early on that Iraq's military strength had been vastly overstated, and no one was coming to their aid
