Watching Rome now because of xoxo and it’s clearly an I Claudius reboot, even thought it’s a different time period. Heavily reliant on the same general themes / devices. I enjoy it but it’s a good reminder to how good I Claudius was, also when you take into account how it was religiously sticking to a source material.
I can’t get my wife to watch I Claudius though. She’d watch rome because of the sex. It is what it is. |

The problem was that it was ahead of its time. In today’s content starved tv market, a show like Rome could run for 8-10 seasons with huge budgets. They could’ve kept moving forward in time and brought in new actors too.
HBO had a deal with BBC to co-fund the show and there were arguments about who should keep finding what and who would have certain international broadcast and dvd rights which led to a falling out and a short ended season 2 without a season 3. |
