You mean legally as in the legal profession? Describe ways in which you're discriminated against.

the statutes and court cases kick in at 40..problem is that it is very hard to prove...courts are not particularly friendly to these claims, as i recall

You're done at 35 unless you have your own business or you're partner.

In Tech it's crazy. Basically you need to be a people manager by 35 and by 40 you should already be an exec if not on the super short list and fully expected to make it at the next plausible opportunity. A nonmanager over 40 applying for other jobs in Tech is like a fired 4th year associate looking for another v50 gig. It's not impossible to pull off, but when you stack that with Melvinism/phenotype deficiencies your odds plummet drastically. Basically they have you by the balls until you do whatever they ask of you to get into management or else you leave and go to some lower paying industry or government and do the same wagecucky bullshit for half the pay (i.e. the "partner track" with a class year ding midlaw position the 4th year associate takes after 8 months of unemployment).

Everything other than Sales, but Sales is even more driven by boomer ass-kissing. Coders it's more like 30 unless you have a desirable specialized background like you're a Security expert.

Legal, Finance, HR, Marketing, and everything else that's not engineering/product it's more gradual, but they still know better than to expect anything good to come from 48 year old "senior counsels" meeting with teams of developers in their late 20s to lecture them about their open source approvals or whatever.

If this is true, I imagine there will be hundreds of thousands of people experiencing age discrimination very soon. Especially considering not everyone is selected to be in a leadership role and they stay in their posts for years and when it's time to move to a new company, bang! They're 39.

There are literally plaintiffs lawyers trying to force Big Tech to include olds as part of the Big Tech diversity and inclusion framework. This is actually a clever rejoinder given that Big Tech's embrace of D&I thus far has essentially been a transparent attempt to try to barely/lazily conceal enthusiastic age discrimination.

What do they accomplish by replacing older workers? Is it mostly about lowering salaries? Someone who is slightly older and with some years of experience can do a better job than a genZ who feels entitled to everything and has zero experience.

For programmers/engineering talent everything changes so quickly (not just code or what languages/skills are in demand, but companies who decide on a whim "oh we need to shift our entire business to be more SaaS/cloud native") and that makes people obsolete more often than not when they've been out of school for five years and almost always by the time they're ten years out. Some places will have good resources for people to continue to add skills, but practically speaking when you're a code monkey you are not going to get time to make use of those resources if you're at all useful for anything the business needs right away. For everything else including Sales it's lower salaries/less LTI and having dumber and more malleable workers when they do stuff like try to replace 50% of the headcount in an org with software/automation.

Right, but people who are just out of school have zero experience, so it will take them longer to actually learn the shit that the company is doing.

Seems like it would depend on the company and your department within the company, and where you fell relative to the median age. In some offices, you can be perceived as one of the "young" guys when you're pushing 50. In others you could lose that status in late 20's.
