whenever i have a long running internal monologue usually its because im bored

in fact now that i think about it the most i had an internal monologue was when i would get drunk in the middle of the day and walk around the city

when i try to do actualy mental work ie anything requiring focused mental processing i almost never descend into some sort of internal monologue

i guess this is why im saying i dont see how an "internal monologue" is indicative of having a high iq, especially when the kind of mental work that goes into scoring high on an iq test isnt really the same type that goes into generating an internal monologue

I think most XOers are generally angry and bored most of the time, so they tend to have long running internal monologues since they don't have to do focused mental work and they have to deal with emotional matters/stress which an internal monologue is extremely well suited for. Lawyers stewing in depressed rage at their desks probably constantly have internal monologues. So they say it's high iq.

like every other reasonably smart person i think about stuff using a combination of language, symbols, and abstractions, moving at a pace that's fast enough that i couldn't verbalize all of it in words unless i slowed it down by a ton and in some cases it just can't be verbalized period

i agree that a lot of life doesn't have to have me verbalize. if i see a bird i don't necessarily have to say "and there is a bird". but if there is anything odd or unusual about it, i will immediately start verbalizing instead "ie wow that bird is a crazy color"

i also don't understand how any higher level planning, designing, etc. can be done without using verbalization

"inner monologue" just means that you utilize language to form your thoughts. if you move to a foreign country and get fluent enough in their language day to day you will actually notice yourself beginning to think in their language, at least occasionally. it's a weird feeling

this is what it is actually like to "not have an inner monologue," as in, not be able to have your thoughts being informed and organized by language and symbols that represent abstractions

i get philosophers confused but there was one guy who made a point about how it's very hard (impossible?) for human beings to be able to understand/grasp an abstract concept unless it can be broken down and represented by language or symbols. without that representation, our brains cannot work with the abstraction because we have no reference point for it. it's a very cr point i think

I understand what you guys mean now. You are talking about how some people basically vocalize in their head every single word, and sometimes accidentally will whisper words when they are thinking out loud or reading. But thats not what I'm talking about when talking about having an inner monologue. I'm just talking about different types of abstract thinking. Whether its visualization, or thinking about conversations, or doing deductive natural language logic or doing math or whatever. This all involves doing an activity in your inner world. When we say LOL some people dont even have inner monologue! We are talking about bird brains that cant even think and just react to stimuli.

I understand what you are saying, im just trying to explain what I think the distinction is that causes people to argue about this.
