slower processing than what? if you dont have an inner monologue you arent thinking so you arent doing any processing. and processing speed is only a small part of iq anyway.

yeah but realistically how often is generating an internal monologue useful unless youre playing out some conversation verbally in your head or literally just ranting aimlessly

whenever i have a long running internal monologue usually its because im bored

in fact now that i think about it the most i had an internal monologue was when i would get drunk in the middle of the day and walk around the city

when i try to do actualy mental work ie anything requiring focused mental processing i almost never descend into some sort of internal monologue

i guess this is why im saying i dont see how an "internal monologue" is indicative of having a high iq, especially when the kind of mental work that goes into scoring high on an iq test isnt really the same type that goes into generating an internal monologue

I think most XOers are generally angry and bored most of the time, so they tend to have long running internal monologues since they don't have to do focused mental work and they have to deal with emotional matters/stress which an internal monologue is extremely well suited for. Lawyers stewing in depressed rage at their desks probably constantly have internal monologues. So they say it's high iq.

thats what I was talking about with the reddit girl. she was trying to say she has aphantasia because she thinks in "abstract thoughts" instead of in "words" or "pictures", but I'm pretty sure she just has the same idea of inner monologue as the guy above trying to argue he doesnt have an inner monologue although he clearly thinks all the time. although the twitter chick is a bird brain so she might legit not have any thoughts period, except that what she is trying to describe sounds more like what the dude above is saying.

The reason I said 2 was because it looks like number 1 has a bite taken out of the top right hand corner and I imagined a full apple. I realized after that it must have been trying to see what level of realism you imagined, but I couldn't tell the context at the time I looked at it because it was poasted out of context.

yeah i mean i don't, having some kind of neurotic stream of consciousness running commentary in your own brain is legit mental illness and really jewish and feminine

like every other reasonably smart person i think about stuff using a combination of language, symbols, and abstractions, moving at a pace that's fast enough that i couldn't verbalize all of it in words unless i slowed it down by a ton and in some cases it just can't be verbalized period

all text I read has to be verbalized in my own mind. i genuinely don't understand how i would be able to process information without doing that

i agree that a lot of life doesn't have to have me verbalize. if i see a bird i don't necessarily have to say "and there is a bird". but if there is anything odd or unusual about it, i will immediately start verbalizing instead "ie wow that bird is a crazy color"

i also don't understand how any higher level planning, designing, etc. can be done without using verbalization

i will concede that inner monologue is highly correlated with being neurosis, anxiety, etc

inner monologue and subvocalization are 2 different things

"inner monologue" just means that you utilize language to form your thoughts. if you move to a foreign country and get fluent enough in their language day to day you will actually notice yourself beginning to think in their language, at least occasionally. it's a weird feeling

subvocalization is what low IQ people do because they are dumb: literally sounding out words in their head because they are too retarded to comprehend them instantly

this is what it is actually like to "not have an inner monologue," as in, not be able to have your thoughts being informed and organized by language and symbols that represent abstractions

i get philosophers confused but there was one guy who made a point about how it's very hard (impossible?) for human beings to be able to understand/grasp an abstract concept unless it can be broken down and represented by language or symbols. without that representation, our brains cannot work with the abstraction because we have no reference point for it. it's a very cr point i think

yeah. i mean his description about not remembering his friends exist before he "discovered" inner thinking is almost sort of disturbing

i'm pretty sure i read in psychology class that there is a specific month when most babies understand that things are still "there" even if they are hidden under a bucket or w/e

it's not flame, there are numerous examples of this that people have encountered/studied. language is a big part of what makes us "human" and not unthinking, unfeeling animals

what you're referring to is object permanence, and it begins to fully develop at about the same time that babies are able to grasp symbols and say their first words

Yeah I'm not saying that the idea of someone not thinking is flame, I know there are people l like this, but the OP of the reddit thread comes off as incredibly flamey.

feel like if anything an internal monologue is connected to emotionality

"emotional intelligenge" as its conceptualized and measured is 100% BS but theres truth to the idea of it

it definitely is, it's feminine neuroticism

i'm sure everyone here has known women who are really neurotic and frequently talk out loud to themselves with their internal monologue, even when other people are around

a lot of people are able to keep this instinctive neurotic stream of consciousness bottled up internally in their minds but it's the same thing

yeah thats not what we are talking about though. when we were talking about "having an inner monologue" we were talking about as opposed to literally just walking around with no thoughts at all. I actually think this is why this became a meme in the first place. because some people were thinking its inner monologue vs no thoughts, and others were just labeling general "thinking" as something separate from an inner monologue.

I understand what you guys mean now. You are talking about how some people basically vocalize in their head every single word, and sometimes accidentally will whisper words when they are thinking out loud or reading. But thats not what I'm talking about when talking about having an inner monologue. I'm just talking about different types of abstract thinking. Whether its visualization, or thinking about conversations, or doing deductive natural language logic or doing math or whatever. This all involves doing an activity in your inner world. When we say LOL some people dont even have inner monologue! We are talking about bird brains that cant even think and just react to stimuli.

I understand what you are saying, im just trying to explain what I think the distinction is that causes people to argue about this.

Edit:

Also Ill add that the neuroticism is a separate thing and that results imo from not being able to control your "inner monologue" or whatever you want to call the inner activity that goes on in your brain.
